MD-11 altitude problems

Featured Replies

Hi all, im having some issues with the MD-11 and Radar contact. I believe i know what the issue is but i need help fixing it. Firstly my QNH is set correctly (1013) but when betty calls 2500 my aircraft is around 300ft above this. Radar contact keeps shouting at me for missing my crossing restriction and thats because it doesnt know im at the previously request altitude.

What could be causing my a/c to be high

thanks

Alan

The 2500 callout is the radio altitude meaning you are 2500 feet above ground. I believe that ATC altitudes are based on pressure altitude unless you are flying above the transition altitude. So you should be flying by the altimeter not the radio altimeter.

I am flying by the alimeter but this is the only reason i can think of that radar contact isnt giving me any lower altitudes and i keep missing my crossing restriction.

First, RC sometimes does not acknolege that you are at the right altitude. It just happens. Secondly, you are probably missing crossing altitudes because RC doesn't know your weight or maximum decent rate. If it says I need you level in 30 miles and it will take you 40 miles to do it with engines at idle and full spoinler, instead of reading back tell them that you are unable.

Im letting my copilot take control of the radios. I'll try a flight with me on the radios and see what happens
