Best Method to transfer FSX from smaller SSD to larger SSD?

Featured Replies

Folks,

I am seeking recommendations on the best way to move my FSX installation to a larger drive.

I have a great deal of add-on scenery by many publishers (Aerosoft, FSDT, Orbx, Ultimate Terrain, Fly Tampa…) and many, many add-on aircraft including PMDG, A2A, RealAir, Captainsim, Carenado, ….. My current FSX installation (225GB) is on its own dedicated SSD (E:\FSX) but I am running out of space on that drive and would like to move it to a new larger 512 GB SSD. The OS and most other programs are on a separate dedicated SSD which has adequate space. What I would like to avoid is a full re-installation of FSX and all of my add-ons if possible.

  • Can I install the new SSD, copy the contents of the current SSD (E:\FSX) to the new SSD (G:\FSX), then remove the old SSD and re-label the new SSD to from G:\FSX to E:\FSX? Is it likely that all/most of my add-on software will work or should I expect that I will experience problems?

  • Would a better choice be to create an backup image of the current FSX drive and then to a restore to the new drive? Will the restored image show all of the available disk space on the new larger drive? ? Is it likely that all/most of my add-on software will work or should I expect that I will experience problems?

My OS is Windows64 Ultimate and I will have Norton Ghost 15. Any and all suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Forget all the manual transfer stuff, all you need to do is clone the old drive to the new drive using a bootable CD from a clone utility. I generally use Symantec Ghost. It's a very straight-forward process. If you pickup a copy of Ghost (use Ebay to get it for super cheap, don't pay retail, it's like 5x the cost) all you need to do is install the new drive, boot from the CD, and do a drive-to-drive image. It's like 5 clicks and 10-20 minutes and you're done. Shut down the system, take the old drive out (to assign drive letters properly), then you can wipe the old drive and reinstall it again to give it a different drive letter and use it however you like.

Acronis is the one I use, just another consideration.

The above suggestions agoukd work fine. Beware you might have to reregister some of your add ons.. Some installers imprint the psychical drive I'd so if you clone it you might have to reregister.. Had that issue with fly Tampa stuff..
