June 18, 201213 yr Author Unfortunately this is all I have for now to run FSX off of. Supposidly it's able to handle it, I just have to do a lot of tweaking it looks like.
June 18, 201213 yr Author So here is another thing. I am willing to spend some extra cash to upgrade some equipment on my laptop. I don't have enough to get a brand new system at the moment. So I know I should probably upgrade the processor that runs higher than 2ghz. Looking at my specs, is there anything that I can upgrade to speed up fsx?
June 18, 201213 yr Not normally too easy to upgrade a laptop, they are often designed with the cooling abilities geared toward what the processor is that they are going to put in there when it first gets designed, and if you start generating more heat in that little area inside the laptop (which a faster processor will almost certainly do), it can cause problems. So then you are into a can of worms, since there isn't really room to add additional fans, nor the flexibility to move things around to get more air movement, as you can with a desktop. Opening up a laptop often voids the warranty on it as well. It might be possible to overclock the processor a little bit via the BIOS to get some more speed, but that too would generate more heat and probably therefore not be a great idea (also likely to void any warranty), personally I would not chance it, since if that is the only computer you can presently justify the cash for, the last thing you want to do is bust it, so in all honesty, I would simply drop the graphics settings a bit and await the time when you can get a faster computer. What you can do of course, is drop the screen resolution the sim is running at in the FSX settings, for example maybe run it at 1024 or even 800 pixels wide, and maybe try it in 16 bit rather than 32 bit, since the less pixels it has to shunt around the screen, the faster it will do that. It's a compromise, but it would probably help. Down in the system tray on your laptop in the bottom right corner of your screen, you will also see an icon for the settings of the mobility graphics. You can tweak some 3D rendering settings in there too, and you may also be able to update the driver via that as well, which can sometimes help to make things run a little better. Whilst you are at it, you might want to make sure windows is fully updated, and, if you fire your computer up in safe mode, you may also be able to disable some processes which are running that you don't need via the Control Panels, for example, my HP Pavillion always fired up the voice recognition software on the built in microphone, which I rarely use, so I stopped it doing that. June 21, 201213 yr Author Thanks for the info Al. Yea, probably not the best idea to start taking apart my laptop. You can vouch for me that, it really is a good laptop and other than FSX performance, it has ran great. Anyways, I guess it just takes time to tweak the settings which I have been doing. I do have a tweaking question though...... So I just bought the Flight1 Citation Mustang which is great! I started out doing a little test flight to check the frames....I have a 30 frame rate limit set (hopefully thats good?) I only use 2D panels so once in the cockpit, everything worked out fine and the frames stayed around 25-29. Spot plane view, also 25-29. Everything was good until I applied full throttle....frame rates started to drop.....all the way down to 2-5. switched it back to spot plane view.....frame rates back up to 25-27. I thought it was kinda strange, just because I was using megascenery and my autogen was turned down. So bottom line is that I need to figure out some more tweaks that can help me out. I don't want to sacrifice too much autogen, because then it will start removing buildings from the airports. I hate to sacrifice weather as well, since I just got REX essential and haven't even tried it yet. Any other options? Chris
June 21, 201213 yr Well, the truth is that you are pushing it quite a bit with REX and the flight 1 Mustang. That Mustang is known to be one of the FPS hogs for FSX, even some very capable computers struggle with that one. I would make sure you have the REX clouds on the lowest resolution settings, don't worry, they still look good on those settings. Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
June 21, 201213 yr Author Yeah once I start Rex, I'll have to do some tweaking. Do you think a 30 fps limit is okay though? What do you have yours set to? Anything else you might add on tweaking other things? Thanks again for all your help.
June 21, 201213 yr But keep FS9! you will need it. I had FSX running very very well, but all of a sudden my frames dropped at one day, without changing anything. Still didnt got it back to speed. Now running FS9 again with great smoothness. I dont feel yet to reinstall FSX, and doubt it will help. Maybe some MS update did it ?
June 21, 201213 yr Personally, I have it on 20, I could certainly get away with going higher, but it's good enough for me. Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
June 22, 201213 yr Author Yeah Johan, FS9 is still the alternative and still on my system...so if all else fails, that might be my only choice. Hopefully this weekend, i'll try and do some more tweaking. Does anyone else have any tips or tricks for tweaking performance that we haven't gone over already?
June 22, 201213 yr and I did the opposite... I reinstalled FS2004 yesterday together with REX2004, GE2006 and a few great airports like KPDX... I mean of course I kept FSX and that is where I will be flying most of the time but it is nice from time to time to fly other aircrafts like the QW RJ100 or the AirSimmer A320...

Exactly what i do? the QW RJ and AirSimmer are amazing and look better than some fsx payware.
June 22, 201213 yr Hi Mayia I noticed you even have more add ons for Fs9... Just one questio : why do you use REX together with some water and airport environment add-ons ?
