Considering upgrading graphics card?

Featured Replies

I currently have a Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 512MB, and i am considering upgrading to a Radeon HD 6870 1GB.

Would there be a noticable difference in graphics?

My systems specs are : Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4Ghz, 3.5GB RAM, Windows 7

Any help would be much appreciated! :)

I apologise i have posted this in the wrong forum and i dont know how to delete or move the post.

I'd go for more Ram.

I just went from a 2gig 6950 to a Nvidia GTX 570 (used for used and they sell around the same price). I experienced less artifacts and I found much less shimmering in the Anti-Aliasing using the same modes on the ATI card.

The 570 might be giving me slightly more FPS? I'm gonna test some more tonight but early on my impressions are that the "Nvidia is always better for FSX" might not be so true with these newer 2GB ATI cards out there.

I'll figure out which one to keep this weekend.

And to answer your question, yes, you should see a noticeable jump in performance and image quality.

Thank you for your reply!

I will look at the Nvidia GTX 570! although i dont think my power supply is 550W so i dont think i can run it. I just wanted to make sure that if i spent the money that i would definitely get a noticable difference in graphics!

thank you!

Edit: After going to the 301.42 drivers on a hunch when swapping the 570 back in most of my findings seem to be void. I was using the newest 302.80 drivers (most people here seem to still be using the 301.42 with the new vsync fix, etc.).

I'm now getting better performance, especially in clouds, with the 570. No stutters anymore either. Do still get some artifacts when panning fast but not enough to be a real problem.

Nvidea cards run better with FSX, as apposed to ATI. The 5 series run vey well indeed. The 6 series is wasted on flightsim as it is unable to utilise the cards full capabilities, so save your cash. If funds permitt go for the 580...looking for a Matrix Platinum version myself at the moment...look around for price comparisons, as they vary greatly.

Arnie....if it ain't broke, don't fix it...
