Challenging Approaches

Featured Replies

Thought a fun topic might be airports that you located that were a real challenge to land at. Mine for today, so far , is Old Harbor Airport. 6R7 , landing on runway 21. When you approach from the Northeast, all you see is a forest, and then the very narrow runway surrounded by trees on either side. The Stearman looks like it will make it without hitting the trees, if you are dead center on the runway. Really gets your pulse rate up. By the way, the airport info even warns up the trees, although they say it is just one tree......

I don't remember the airport, but a job I flew earlier this am in the Maule had me landing on a very small airstrip, with tall pines I guess it was right off the end. Had to drop down just over the trees, strong crosswind, had my plane heading straight for the trees off the side of the runway. Luckily I got the " hit N to skip" message just before hitting the trees, hit it quickly, and found myself safely parked in the parking spot I was to go to lol...

Herendeen Bay (AK33) is not exactly a piece of cake. Short runways, trees close in on either side, no lights. On runway 30, at least, you have some room to go past the end of the runway. On the others, not so much.

I made several attempts before I managed a decent landing in the RV-6. I probably should have used the Maule.
