Intel or AMD?

Featured Replies

I'm split down the middle on what processor to choose for my next build. It seems like Intel has a rep of more computing power and the i5 and i7's are superior to almost everything but I've been told that an AMD will last me a lot longer and is better at processing 3D graphics. I just want something that will let me unleash FSX to it's full potential. What do you guys have to say about this? Thanks everyone.

For FSX the i7/i5 IB/SB is the way to go.

AMD is out of the game as far as gaming goes. Atleast in the i5/i7 segment. Maybe you can find something that is on par to the i3 performance wise.

I'm not sure what you mean by last longer? expected lifetime of the CPU? If so, maybe. But I doubt any CPU today will expire before they are "yesterdays technology" anyway.

There are some situations where an AMD is better for rendering, multitasking and winzip'ing(!).

Anyways, you cant go wrong with Intel, but you can with AMD.

Intel is better right now. AMD lags far behind in all but server workloads where their massive core counts help process requests faster. Everywhere else (read: desktops, laptops, tablets, smart phones) Intel has faster and cooler CPUs. For FSX it's not even a contest. AMD CPUs can't even win the rendering benchmarks anymore when you factor in Intel's QuickSync technology which absolutely blows everything else on the market out of the water. Get yourself an i5 3570k or i7 3770k and a Z77 motherboard, pair it with some fast RAM (2400 or higher), overclock as far as you're comfortable doing, and be extremely happy with the performance.

For FSX.,

Its Intel and NVidia!

Period!
