30" Monitor vs HD TV

Featured Replies

Hey Guys,

I've been playing around with Dell U3011 and HP ZR30w 30" monitors. Its been the typical game of buying and returning them trying to get a good one with both brands. I think I've finally found one that might be a keeper, a Dell U3011. However I am not past my return date yet, and am wondering how something like a 42" to 46" 1080P HDTV display might look in comparison with FSX/Prepar3D.. I like the display as close as possible to my Saitek Cessna Yoke so the instrument panels in the VC meet the yoke for a better perspective making the two more like one. So am I gonna have to sit like 6' back from an HDTV to get a crisp picture, or can you sit pretty close to these things. My local stores dont have any games running on their 1080P HDTV's so I really havent a clue what the experience is like. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The difference in resolution alone is enough to put me off using a HDTV for flight sim, especially when you are already using a 30" screen at a res of 2560x1600. 1920X1080 (i.e. what most HDTV's display at an absolute maximum) will look awful at 40"+ and only a couple of feet away.

Cheers, Andy.

Chris,

I am not using a 40 inch but I kept it down to 37 inch.

At the beginning it took some getting used to but now I wouldn't go back for any price.

(winning the lottery tonight would give me pause to reconsider though(190.000.000 euros).

I was making the same objections at first but the resolution is quite acceptable and I am sitting bout 4ft away from the screen.
