When to switch to default fsx in FTX Central when flying outside of ftx areas / set to default for addon installs?

Featured Replies

I've been confused on this one for some time so I figured i'd put this out there.

For starters... if you already have say parts of FTX AU and FTX PNW installed.. and you are moving on to install other scenery areas like say Aerosoft Chicago X or MegaSceneryX California, Aspen X etc.. Do you always set the FTX Central to Default FSX or problems will occur?

Secondly.. if you aren't flying in an FTX region say Chicago, should you first exit fsx and switch to Default FSX in FTX Central? What about a region that may or may not be outside of FTX (aspen or colorado if you have the CRM installed for instance).. Would a situation like this, if it mapped 1 to 1 example:

FlyTampa Seattle.. Would you install this while FTX Central is set to default AND then again (or add to library again) when set to North America mode and then fly Seattle under FTX set to NA but the FlyTampa above orbx entries?

Some have said that textures or weird things can occur in areas outside of FTX when you dont switch to default fsx mode, though i really havent noticed anything so far.. not sure what i should be looking for.. IE: chicago, or pittsburgh or Cleveland (x).

Thanks for any feedback here, just would like to get a clear picture on this.

I should add, previously it was my generic understanding that only texture changing addons like gex or utx should be installed with ftx central set to default fsx mode.. and that pretty much any addon, like aerosoft (chicago x), or megascenery, megaearth etc, can all be installed while in North America mode without an issue...

It is recommended by Orbx to install non Orbx scenery, with FTX central set to default.

And,when flying outside of the Orbx coverage zones,to switch FTX central to default.

I generally leave FTX central to NA when flying anywhere in North Anerica.

Hope this helps!

So if you leave yours to NA how does non orbx addons still show up. As when installing in default fsx the entries get added to scenery cfg but when u switch back to NA they aren't listed. Or is this just the recommendation but no one really follows it :)

Non-Orbx scenery shows up fine if you leave FTX set to any Orbx region. It's in your scenery list, once installed, no matter how you install it. When you set FTX Central to Default, then the Orbx scenery no longer shows up in your scenery list, but when you set FTX Central to NA, for instance, nothing else in your scenery list is removed. So, I fly with FTX Central set to NA except when I fly in some other FTX region. I see all my other scenery (what little I have of it, such as MegaScenry SoCal and LA, and the ES scenery I have of the channel islands) just fine. I never set FTX to Default except to install non-Orbx scenery (just to be safe). If you leave FTX set to a region, then that regions trees, for instance, will show up all over. I like the Orbx trees though, so that's not an issue.

Hmm ok. I might have to double check but I was pretty sure the addon I installed w FTX central on default was not listed in the library when I set it to NA mode.

Yeah, you need to double check, as FTX Central is not set up to remove other scenery, just enable or disable Orbx scenery. What probably happened is that your other scenery wasn't in the same place on the list once all the Orbx stuff was added, and you didn't notice it further down.

thanks for the input. I may also need to just uninstall the handful of addons I installed under NA mode by mistake I suppose.

No, I doubt it. If any of them changed texture files, then, yeah, that would be a problem, but not a problem of the scenery not showing up, just a problem of having overwritten Orbx textures with other textures.

If you installed a scenery while FTX Central was set to NA, then it's there in FSX, and it probably didn't interact with the Orbx scenery (if it's not in the same area). If it did interact, then you're going to need to reinstall Orbx as well, which would be a headache for me, with all of it that I've got.

I'd just check to make sure the scenery is showing up in the scenery library and then as long as you don't see any problem flying around, leave it alone.

I only switch mine to default for installing non-orbx sceneries.

After the install, I switch it back.

I fly anywhere without it changing from default, and it doesn't cause a problem.
