October 4, 201213 yr As some of you know, if you want a TIR5 alternative , there are two choices: Freetrack and Facetracknoir(FTNOIR). Freetrack works just like TIR5, with a IR led clip, but it appears that the developers have abandoned further development and for some people it crashes or it behaves erratically. FTNOIR uses a face recognition technology so that all you need is your web camera to change views in FSX. FTNOIR, however, is particular about room lighting. If there's insufficient lighting, it will not recognize your face very well and will thus create problems with smooth viewing. To my delight, a plug in for FTNOIR makes FTNOIR work with my homemade IR clip that I had made for Freetrack. This plug in works beautifully. I've always felt that $160 for Tir5 was too steep for me, so now with FACETRACKNOIR and the plug I have the perfect combination. Since it's free, those of you who don't have TIR5 should get it. It's the best deal in town, and the developers are looking for users for feedback in order to improve it. I've been using it for a week, and my feedback has prompted the developer to quickly issue a new version. It doesn't getter better than that! You can download it from here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/ftnoirpt/ tc
October 4, 201213 yr Author The freetrack.com site has plenty of pictures and how-to's. It will also work with a TIR5 clip--for those who are afraid to mess with electronics and a bit of craft. Mine is : 1/4 foam board shaped into a side clip 3 ir leds 1 resistor 1 USB cable to plug it right into a usb port to eliminate the battery pack and the weight, and the bulk of the batteries as well velcro an old elastic head band from a bicycle headlamp. and some soldering. All of this can be picked up at a Radio Shack, the foam can be subtituted with anything that's light and can be shaped easily. Took me an hour to put it together. If you decide to use an usb chord, you need only two wires. I also use a usb $3 charger purchased at homedepot , right by the counter, and plug it into my outlet to avoid issues with my pc. tc
