October 27, 201213 yr Ever since a certain date (a few weeks ago), every helicopter that I install ends up freezing FSX just before it loads. All the helicopters installed before that date work fine, but everything installed since (which has all been freeware) has completely frozen FSX. This happens regardless of whether I load the helicopter first thing, after loading the default flight, or after switching from another aircraft. Any ideas? Thanks, boeing247 -Bram Osterhout

October 28, 201213 yr You need to download and run AppCrashView and see if there was a faulting module or other explanation for the CTD (freeze) - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/app_crash_view.html. Did the helicopter program come with an .exe program or did you have the extract from a .zipped file? It appears you did not install the software properly and it is looking for a module or gauge and cannot find it. If you disable the helicopters you installed, does fsx startup okay? Another thing you can do is run Process Monitor (Google) before starting up FSX. After the freeze/ctd, you can go back to the Process Monitor and see if there is anything in the report that shows what happened. Have you also tried renaming your fsx.cfg, restarting fsx and allowing the config to rebuild to see if this fixed the problem? This fixes a lot of problems. If it does not fix it, you can go back and rename the orig config back to FSX.cfg. Best regards, Jim Jim Young | AVSIM Online! - Simming's Premier Resource! October 28, 201213 yr Author FSX starts up fine, it's just that it crashes (or rather freezes) when I load those helicopter addons. The WhatIsHang program says that it's freezing due to an infinite or very long loop, which is the same thing that causes it to freeze when I bring up the aircraft selection screen due to the high number of aircraft (but that only lasts for about 30 seconds). And I think that problem actually has to do with this helicopter autopilot gauge that a lot of people are including in freeware addons. I thought I had managed to remove it, but perhaps not. Do you know anything about that gauge causing CTD's? -Bram Osterhout
October 28, 201213 yr This might be it. It was orginally made for FS9 but it says FSX and FS9 now - http://www.dirkfassbender.de/AFCP/index.html. Here's an individual who has having issues similar to yours - http://nealword.blogspot.com/2011/10/fsx-keeps-crashing-when-flying.html.
