October 31, 201213 yr Recently I switched from Windows XP to Windows 7 ( 64 bit ) and since then I noticed a dramatic longer time to open FSX. Ex: To open FSX : 1 minute To select an aircraft : 1 minute 5 sec With XP it was much faster. I use a dual core CPU plus 4 gigabyte RAM memory. It was suggested to install more memory but before doing that I am anxious to hear the opinions of other flight simmers. Mind you, once an aircraft is selected then it runs ok,about same as with my former XP. Herbert Werni Herbert Werni
November 9, 201213 yr It was suggested to install more memory That's a poor suggestion to add more memory if you have 4GB of memory but you need to understand that FSX, in a Windows 7 64 bit environment, can only see about 4 GB's of memory even if you had 50 GB's of memory installed. No more. If you just have 4GB's of memory, then Windows 7 will let you 'see' about 3GB's of memory and no more. Windows needs the rest to run your operating system. I have 8 GB's. Some have 16GB's and even 24GB's of memory which, for FSX is excessive IMHO. But, the startup of FSX does take about 1 minute if you have a lot of addons. I remember when I first installed FSX on my self-built computer with the new i7 2600K CPU installed. It started up in less than 15 seconds. Then I started adding things to FSX and it got progressively longer and longer but always stayed below 30 seconds. You have to know that FSX is loading all your aircraft, all your scenery, all your weather programs, every AI aircraft installed and makes sure the aircraft are placed in the appropriate positions throughout the world no matter where you are starting up FSX. So things went well with my startups until I installed MyTrafficX. Startup times exceeded one minute. It was ugly! But, there's nothing I can do about it as I want my AI. I just make sure I load no more than 40%. If I raise that value in the FSX settings higher, my startup will increase accordingly. Another issue could be a tweak in your FSX.cfg or a corrupted config. Have you tried renaming your FSX.cfg to say, FSX.old, then restarting FSX and letting the config rebuild? Sometimes that opens things up. You might want to make sure your Virtual Memory (page file) is set to System Managed Size. FSX seems to like that setting the best. You must defrag your HDD after installing FSX and any addon. It is unbelievable what Windows 7 does to the organization of your HDD when it installs Windows or FSX. It is a mess and nothing on the HDD is seemingly in any order. So defrag your HDD (do not defrag a SSD). Right now, with the very limited information you have provided in your OP, these are the only suggestions I can provide at this time.
