Cirrus at high altitude problem

Featured Replies

Hello,

There comes a time when I also need help.

I'd like to know if anyone else has noticed this.

When I load the fair weather, a 40,000ft cirrus layer is created. When seen from the ground, depending on textures installed, will look like this:

If my cloud visibility distance is set to 90mi, all is fine. But if I set it to 110mi, I get the above picture. The problem is that the clouds are kind of cut off on the far edge. Maybe not clearly visible on the static picture, but definitely visible when panning around aircraft.

Also noticed that if I climb, the effect will disappear, or also put the layer even higher, 50,000 or 60,000 ft, it will be even more prominent.

It kind of annoys me and I'd like to know if there is a way to avoid this. Maybe someone know what is causing it.

I know it is not:

1) texture installed, tried REX 3 sets and AS 1 set

2) weather theme, as it happens when single set is created

3) cloud texture itself, because when I convert to cumulus, the problem isn't there any more

Any ideas?

Are you talking about the repeating texture in the cirrus clouds, or only that they are being cut off at the outermost edge?

One problem I have with the Fair Weather theme is that the visibility is too great. Setting a lower visibility should take care of the cut off clouds, and to me looks a lot better. Lowered visibility hides a variety of problems.

or only that they are being cut off at the outermost edge?

Only that. I know I can cut off the visibility, but the problem appears in METARs that create such high cirrus clouds, like the recent METAR from Opus, also appeared in Activesky etc.

They have the maximal visibility of 60mi, but I was still able to see the cutoff line.

Why it bothers me is why doesn't it happen at lower clouds altitudes, or if I convert them to cumulus?

I've never seen the clouds cut off (haven't looked, really), but I have noticed with AS2012 clouds in the distance will start as small spots and expand as I approach them. I'm pretty sure this depends on my cloud draw distance in FSX, and the visibility options set in AS2012, probably whichever is lower.

I've just noticed in the new REX's manual that they say this: "Cloud draw distance instructs FSX how far to draw clouds in-game. We found that if the setting is set to full-right (110mi), the cirrus clouds will appear cutoff. Backing this off to 100mi will rectify this issue while still giving a great distance to view clouds."

So maybe you have that cloud draw distance set to a value higher that 100 miles, and that is causing the cutoff clouds that you see.

Jikul, many thanks for your discovery! I know setting back is a fix, but I wanted to know if this is a general problem. Apparently it is.
