November 18, 201213 yr I like the GNS 530 in my RealAir Legacy but I don't like the fact there isn't a way to have all databases correspond with each other... In NA I usually had problems finding an airport in the GNS because ICAO codes had changed over time and now in England I just found out there are airports the GNS 530 doesn't know AT ALL...! (I use the June 2011 database for the GNS). I just tried to take off from EGOX but the GNS didn't know it... I wonder how many other airports there are that the GNS doesn't know...? Which brings me to the next question: in PNW I also used the GNS for GPS approaches. I haven't got a clue how much there are in England... Are there any...? The main reason for buying and using the GNS were the approaches and the terrain warning function. The latter has no real use in Englad, so I can do without it, but I wonder about the approaches... Maybe I should switch back to the default GPS: at least that one knows EGOX...! But it would be a shame if that means I would be missing a lot of GPS approaches... Last question: since England is rather flat, I am planning to do some VOR flights (haven't done those since MS Flight...). For the US I used AirNav to find data for triangulation (distances and radials from the VORs that would lead me to the airport). Is there a similar site for that for England? I would love being able to simply look up two VOR radials for any available airport and then leave the GPS off to do it all the old fashioned way! (I know I could do it using a real map and so on but I don't have a real map and I don't want to do EVERYTHING the old fashioned way. ^_^ ) Found the answer myself: see posts below about http://ourairports.mobi/countries/GB/ENG/
November 18, 201213 yr I have been looking for a site like AirNav also for England with no luck. William Sequeira
November 18, 201213 yr Found one!!! http://ourairports.m...untries/GB/ENG/ Take EGOX for instance. Go to the site I linked and search for Kirkbride, England. The first result will the airport of Kirkbride. Click on it and you will see more info about the airport. For instance that the ICAO code nowadays is X5KB and not EGOX anymore... (The GNS 530 doesn't know that one either, but well...) On the top you will see Related pages and one of them is Nearby navaids. Click on it and you will see ALL the information you need for triangulation!!! For Kirkbride these would do perfectly: Dean Cross VOR-DME: DCS (-.. -.-. ...), 115.2 MHz, 11 nm/20 km to airport from DCS @ 31°mag (32° radial) Talla VOR-DME: TLA (- .-.. .-), 113.8 MHz, 37 nm/69 km to airport from TLA @ 176°mag (177° radial) This is looking good! I will plan a new flight and see if I can get to my destination only using the information from this site and VOR.
November 18, 201213 yr For charts you can use the UK AIP. Google it but I believe it's nats.co.uk or something Best Lee
November 18, 201213 yr Just did a very short hop from Leeds Bradford to Woodford. I had to search on the site using the ICAO code, EGCD, because Woodford didn't show anything useful. Turns out the official name is Manchester Woodford. Anyway, I looked up the nearby navaids and figured out the best ones to use were: Manchester VOR-DME: MCT (-- -.-. -), 113.55 MHz, 4 nm/8 km to airport from MCT @ 109°mag (111° radial) Pole Hill VOR-DME: POL (.--. --- .-..), 112.1 MHz, 24 nm/45 km to airport from POL @ 187°mag (188° radial) I decided to intercept the outbound radial of 188 from POL and to use MCT for triangulation. Worked like a charm! Found the airport without any problems using VOR only. I intercepted the outbound 188 radial about 15 nm out of Pole Hill, using the VOR 1 in the Legacy, which gave me some time to get steady on the radial to wait for MCT to start centering on the 2nd VOR. The distances on top of the airport were 24,2 and 3,9 or something like that. Obviously I already noticed the airport from a greater distance but at least it works perfectly. (Woodford also has an NDB on the airport but I acted as if it wasn't there. ^_^ ) So http://ourairports.mobi/countries/GB/ENG/ will be my 'UK AirNav' from now on! BTW Big fun flying VORs again!!!
