July 24, 200421 yr Author John, I just checked out your Fiat 500 site; I just LOVE the Mama bit! Very clever. It's a car that's close to my heart, although I always had to open the sunroof to drive my girlfriend's personally, being 6' 3". When we were both 17, she and two girlfriends intended to drive from London to Athens in her 500 to take a couple of weeks holiday in the Greek Islands. I asked if I could come along. When they had finished laughing, I challenged them to a race. They would drive the 500, I would hitch hike. Last one to the youth hostel in Athens was to buy the Retsina.I beat them by four hours. It was a four day trip for both of us (that's about 600 miles a day), although I beat my own time hitching back six weeks later by achieving it in three days. Hitched a Fiat 500 (yes, I finally got in one, but not theirs) from Athens to Trieste; a Fiat something or other from Trieste to Turin; and then a Ferrari from Turin to Southampton, England. Yeahhhhhhhh. Those were the days. He even let me drive ....Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg _________________________ Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumont VP Fleet, DC-3 Airways Team Member, MAAM-SIM
July 24, 200421 yr These little cars just keep going. Mine is 33 years old now which isn't bad considering it was built to last 4-5 years at the most!London-Athens must have been one hell of a trip. After half an hour in a FIAT 500, the noise starts to get to me. I have made a number of fairly long trips though. No chance for the little car if you're hitching in a Ferrari though. :-hah John
July 24, 200421 yr Author <<>>I think the three girls were less comfortable than I was. Going east, my rides varied from an eighteen-wheeler to a Land Rover, various Volkswagens and a Rolls Royce (he made a pass at me, didn't stay long in that car). But it is only 2,500 miles. Even though Brits live in a small country from which it is very easy to fall off if you turn around too quickly, our cars only come into their own when they start to age. Americans throw theirs away at that point.
