hi ken can you tell me what programs i can shut down in xp.i have your fs auto program and would like to use it .for i have alot of stuttering in fs9 tried all of the tweakes but no lucked .thought i would try your programe but not sure what to turn off cheers mark ken my email address [email protected] :-shy

Hi.I don't know what you have running, so I really cannot tell you what to shut down.As far as services (I'll assume you are running Windows 2000/XP), I provide a help window with recommendations for known services. Of course, if you have installed software that has its own services, then my program cannot recommend anything. As far as programs, on my system I pretty much kill everything, even the desktop (explorer.exe) and my antivirus. The reason is for antivirus is that the only thing FS downloads during a session is weather, and AFAIK you can't get a virus that way! However, I have had users report that killing some programs intereferes with their network, so your mileage may vary. If something weird happens, I recommend trial and error to find out what the problem is.

Ken:Just out of curiosity, how many processes do you have running while simming?Wilson

I've recently upgraded from Windows 98 to XP and currenly have only 14 processes running while flying FS. I've created many different hardware profiles that I boot into which turn off all kinds of services etc, denpending on what I'm doing. Creating a differnt hardware profile is very simple, and works well...Their are alot of tweaks and tips out there, you just have to look. Go to google and search on "XP tweaks and tips".For example: click start, then run and type the following:msconfigfollowed by ok. Here you can change all kinds of goodies..See link below for some good tips..Or for services, typeServices.mscWith this command, once you've created another hardware profile, you can go into the services, right click on a service, and disable it for a specific hardware profile. Now everytime you boot up and select a hardware profile specificly made for Flight Sim, all the services you don't want will not startNeed more room on your harddrive... Did you know windows uses many temp folders that don't get emptied..Type %temp% under the run command. See how much junk you have in this folder? Delete it all, you don't need any of it...You might find this link very interesting to read..http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...;EN-US;815069#2This link did work, so just copy and paste the whole thing into the address line in your internet exploxer..RJ

I have P4 3.0 512 ram.I kill no processes. Have 34 running, including anti-virus stuff.Great frame rates. Default planes. Downloaded static realweather. Max clouds. Photo scenery. Autogen dense. Frames unlimited.2x AA card controlled.Mip 4.Peter Sydney Australia

Well good for you Peter! Unfortunately not everyone is lucky enough to have a setup as good as yours. Some of us need all the help we can get!CheersTim (still running an AMD XP1.5)http://www.fssupport.com/maam_sim/maamsim_logo.gif

Typically I shutdown every running program (including the desktop), and I close almost all services except the ones needed for networking and sound and the ones that are essential for the OS to run properly (like RPC).I then startup ActiveSky and Radar Contact.I usually regain approximately 100 MB of RAM (sometimes more) doing this (plus I defragment my RAM).The next time I fire up FSAutoStart, I'll take a screen shot of my running processes....

That method works well also. The only problem, which is one of the reasons why I wrote FSAutoStart, is that you have to reboot and select the profile. With FSAutoStart, no reboot is needed. But, to each his/her own....

Man, Ken, it has been a long time since you fired up FSAutoStart!I'm starting to get worried about you :-) Seriously, I (and I bet others) would be interested in seeing how my running processes compares to the guy who wrote FSAutoStart. Thanks,Wilson

:-lolWell, the main reason is my main OS is Linux. I promise I'll boot back into XP tonight...

Yes. I certainly sympathise with you Tim.Good luck!Peter Sydney Australia

If I did that, I'd have frame rates of 2.4-2.8fps... :-hangWish I had YOUR system.... :-hah
