November 25, 201213 yr hello, One of my fellow workers (his laptop) has caught a nasty case of ransomware. In trying to help him out I have not been very succesfull. Whe I reboot the laptop, both normal and in safemode, the virus kicks in. And so I can't get acces to the os. I have tried several of the solutions proposed on the various websites but sofar without any luck. Do anybody know of a virusscanner that I can install on a USB-stick or on a rescuedisk? I guess this is the only way to find the culprit and kill it. All sugestions are welcome. Luc Brusselmans Belgium
November 26, 201213 yr All sugestions are welcome. A friend of mine had it once and I got it repaired for him but can't remember but you should download Malwarebytes - http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and run that (maybe from your flash drive). It will find the problem. Here's another link that shows how to remove this malware - http://www.selectrealsecurity.com/remove-ransomware. He has a method using a flash drive. Good luck! November 26, 201213 yr Author Hello Jim, Last night I finally got it nailed. The main problem was getting acces to the pc. Safe mode didn't work so I had to find a way to scan the laptop from outside the OS. While most programs can find and disarm the virus without much trouble, only a few of can be run from a flasdrive or cd. Finding that program (with recent virusdata files) was the biggest challenge. In the end Dr.Web did the trick. Luc Bruselmans Belgium
November 27, 201213 yr While most programs can find and disarm the virus without much trouble, only a few of can be run from a flasdrive or cd. Finding that program (with recent virusdata files) was the biggest challenge. Glad you got it fixed. That malware is one of the nastiest. I had one earlier this year where the malware basically showed that my HDD had been wiped out and, when I opened Windows Explorer, all the directories, all the HDD's were gone. The malware said that it could return all of the drives and directories only if I paid $49.95 (or something like that). Well, I didn't and was fortunate I had a laptop to do some searching for a fix and was able to restore almost everything. Malwarebytes on a flash drive did find the malware and quaranted it but it didn't get everything. There are some nasty people out there! November 27, 201213 yr Glad you solved the problem. If I may suggest. Have your friend backup all his documents and stuff. Then do a complete system restore or fresh install as some or probably many system files might have been corrupted. This will also help prevent latency or dormant virus pieces. Cheers Ramón. Time, is the one thing no one can buy.
