Format, Registry and Performance

Featured Replies

Hi:I had to reformat yesterday, but I keep programs on seperate partitions. After reformat and reinstall of XP, some programs, including FS9, boot up and run without benfeit of registry entries in the new registry. My questions is, will there be any problems, including performance loss, if I leave the registry as is, or should I reinstall to FS9 (and other programs) to get their registry values back in teh registry? Many Thanks

There will be no performance difference, but there will be a problem if any new add-on needs to know whether or not, and where, FS9 is installed. The add-on installers often will abort if it cannot find the FS9 entry in the registry (but some will let you manually specify the location). You may also have the same problem with updates to the add-ons if they cannot find the original add-on registry entry. It's easy to add the registry entry for FS9 but I'm not familiar with most of the add-on entries. If you want to add the FS9 entry to the registry without having to reinstall, just copy everything below that is between the dotted lines to a text file and name it anything you like but change the extension to .reg (for example, FS9RegistryEntry.reg). You need to change two lines, however, to match your installation. Change the "EXE Path" to show the installed partition and the "CDPath" to match your CD drive letter. Then, just double click the file and the information will be added to the registry. Doug:I hope you're still monitoring this post. I'm having the same problem after a Win98SE reload and my GoFlight avionics hardware configurator not "seeing" FS 2004. I tried amending the registry with a .reg file sent to me by Doyle from GoFlight, but I keep getting the same error message:"The specified file is not a registry script. You can import only registry files."I've tried double clicking, right clicking and "merging" and using regedit. Nothing works, I keep getting the same message. Here is what the text looks like after I open the .reg file with nNotepad:"MP9Check"="3""Zone"="http://zone.msn.com/asp/fs04redir.asp""Version"="9.0""Launched"="1""PID"="69768-442-5334015-49861""DigitalProductID"=hex:"EXE Path"="F:FS2004""CDPath"="H:""VersionType"="RetailVersion""InstalledGroup"="5""LangID"=dword:00000009Any ideas?http://www.2decker.com/media/solent1-2.JPGAlex ChristoffN562ZBaltimore, MD

Just a guess, but you've probably got your folder view settings set to 'hide extensions for known file types'. Even though your file is called "example.reg", Windows sees it as "example.reg.txt" -- you don't see the .txt extension because of hiding the extension of a known file type.To check this, open up a command prompt (a DOS prompt, or whatever you want to call it!), change to the directory where this registry script resides, then issue the 'dir' command. You'll see a listing of files, but you'll also see all extensions on all the files. If this is in fact the case, in the same command prompt window, just type something like 'ren example.reg.txt example.reg' -- this will remove the .txt extension from your registry script, and should get you past the error message that you're encountering.Hope it helps!

With Win98(SE) I think the first line of the .reg file must say REGEDIT4. Try removing any reference to Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 and replace it with REGEDIT4. Or, if there is no reference at all to either of these, add the line REGEDIT4 so that the file looks like what's between the dotted lines below. (Also,be sure the "EXE Path" and "CDPath" lines match the configuration of your system).Doug----------------------------------------------------------------------REGEDIT4"MP9Check"="3""Zone"="http://zone.msn.com/asp/fs04redir.asp""Version"="9.0""Launched"="1""PID"="69768-442-5334015-49861""DigitalProductID"=hex:"EXE Path"="F:FS2004""CDPath"="H:""VersionType"="RetailVersion""InstalledGroup"="5""LangID"=dword:00000009----------------------------------------------------------------------
