Heavy Iron Considering P3D, any advice before the leap

Featured Replies

Need to reinstall FSX after several failed attempts to resolve issue of FSX locking loading flight at around 33%.

Since doing new install, thought might as well consider P3D, so got a few questions.

1. Any differences i should know about P3D from FSX, example does is there default ATC like in FSX

2. FSX.cfg and other tweak file, do they have same name , and stored in same paths, generally is tweaking gona be new lesson.

3. Do you know of any commonly used addons that has issues working with P3D, example does As2012 do P3D, cant recall it asking for my sim , always looks for fsx folder.

4. Mostly fly heavy iron long haul, which sim is better suited for this fsx or P3D.

5. Also considering not having FSX installed at all, will this help make things easier regards the issues

of installing FSX addons to P3D, been reading about all kinds of registry editing horror stories you need to do

to fool fsx addons to install in P3D folder. Atleast for those addons with no P3D install.

6. I need to install a sim, should i just install P3D and save the hassle of maintaining P3D and FSX. From what i hear, if you have no sim installed, then you better of with P3D. Does this sound right.

7. ANybody knows diffrence between academic and pro P3D, whats in pro academic aint got.

Ouch, that doesnt sound like fun...this is from personal experience...

A - It is basically FSX, with sharper graphics and quite a few optimisations...like someone said, like FSX on steroids. Yes, there is default ATC, although will admit I havent used it.

2. FSX.cfg and other tweak file, do they have same name , and stored in same paths, generally is tweaking gona be new lesson.

Yes and no....FSX.cfg will become P3D.cfg, but the contents are the same, stored in the same paths. Tweaking is not needed in the depths that FSX needs it, you can run the Bojote tweaks and away you go, that is all I did and mine runs beautifully.

3. Do you know of any commonly used addons that has issues working with P3D, example does As2012 do P3D, cant recall it asking for my sim , always looks for fsx folder.

AS2012 supports P3D fully with the new SP2. I have it running without issues. There is a very useful FSXtoP3D migrator, you can buy it for $10, it is money well spent.

4. Mostly fly heavy iron long haul, which sim is better suited for this fsx or P3D

If you are looking for stability, then I would have to say P3D....it just runs far more stable for me, no crashes, no lock ups, no OOMs, no surprises.

I uninstalled FSX and then made a clean install of P3D...dont need FSX at all. Consider looking for the P3D migrator tool, it takes away any fiddling of porting FSX native stuff over.

Not sure it makes a difference so it is personal preference. Some add ons dont work too well in P3D but most do. All the stuff I wanted/owned works fine in P3D so the decision for me was very easy indeed.

7. ANybody knows diffrence between academic and pro P3D, whats in pro academic aint got

Put it simple, if you wish to develop add ons or use the software in a heavier commercial environment, you go the Pro version. If you will use it for learning or training purposes, go for Academic.

Hope it helps!

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions to complete, much appreciated.

Life will be much easier if i remove FSX, and only have to maintain one sim. Dont use much addons outside the usual as2012/rex/rc4.

case in point

googled " fsx crashes loading terrain data" and compare results with "P3D crashes loading terrain data"

After upgrading my rig to improve things to find issues i had had before, i thought FSX was written 10 years ago, in win7 HW/SW world of today, too hard to maintain fsx in such a scenario where there is no software authority updating it to ensure it works with all the other stuff on today' PC's.

The biggest aspect is addons using today',s API to work with yesterday,s FSX, problems gona crop up oustide thier test cases all the time, as they are coding against older tech.

I might as well go P3D v1.4 for now, be used to it before the DX11 P3D v2.

In summary, my main drive from FSX to P3D is stability.

Big thanks for reminder on P3D migration tool, heard its best way forward, to avoid registry editing etc.

Install should be fun, take it slow an steady, Make backup, Format drives etc............................................................
