November 29, 201213 yr Hi! Finally, I did it! I ordered my new machine today. After 5 years with my E6850 C2D with 4GB RAM and a GTX260 with 896MB, the following setup is (hopefully) going to be my clue to a stutter free and nicely performing FSX: i5 3570K (with Skythe cooler) ASUS P8Z77 V-Pro Mainboard 16 GB DDR 3 RAM 1600 CL9 ASUS GTX 670 2GB 480 GB SSD Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit The machine will probably arrive by the end of next week. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to o/c this setup. Any tips are highly appreciated! And, at which maximum clock speed will this setup be still rock stable? Thanks in advance and greets, Michael
November 29, 201213 yr To be a little more precise: Which settings do I have to change in the Bios? With my old machine, I changed the RAM frequency from 800 to 667 MHz and raised the FSB frequency from 333 to 400 until the RAM was at 800 MHz again and the CPU was at 3.61 instead of 3.2 GHz. And that setup worked flawlessly for the last 4 years. Which steps have to be done to get a stable over clocking with my new components? Thanks in advance for your help!
November 30, 201213 yr Well with 2nd and 3rd generation 'K' series processors you don't need to change FSB at all. Instead of frequency you got to change the multiplier. For eg. FSB by default is 100 so if you want 4.3 ghz all you have to do is to type '43' in the multiplier box(43.x100=4.3 ghz) thats how it works unless you are looking for some really extreme overclocking. But there is more to it than that. There are many other settings which need to be adjusted for getting a overclock beyond 4.3-4.4 ghz in most of chips. You can search on youtube and I am sure there are many Ivy Bridge overclocking tutorials for ASUS BIOS. Trust me overclocking has become alot easier since sandy bridge K series processors came along. Also most of the motherboards of current gen are too picky about any change in their FSB. So, don't change the FSB unless absolutely necessary. Be sure to have a good Aftermarket Cooling solution before attempting any kind of overclock on IB processors. As for RAM i would suggest you to go for a 2400 or 2200 MHZ RAM. You don't need to overclock RAM at all. All you have to do is to select the XMP profile inside the bios for your RAM and it will be all set to run at it's specified frequency. You don't need to manually overclock RAM unless you change FSB. For better explanation refer to youtube tutorials. Here is a link from my side . It's a guide from newegg to overclocking IB chips. November 30, 201213 yr I agree about the RAM... with IB you will notice faster RAM (less stutters) compared to SB. DDR3 1866mhz as a minimum. 2400 is better. | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
November 30, 201213 yr Thank you guys! I'll watch that YouTube video, but since I don't want to do too much overclocking (4.4 GHz should be enough for a start and to have a much better performance than with the the old rig), it shouldn't be too hard to do. I'd like to have a stable setup without the need of fiddling around with the voltages. Just because there'll be a lot to do and all the software has to be installed/tweaked again. Not a thing I am looking all too much forward to...
November 30, 201213 yr for 4.4, simply change the multi to 44. Thats it...don't make any other change. Run it and see if its stable. If its not. Up the volage by .005 and see and so on. But remain below 1.3v and watch your temp each time you OC and test it, Be careful with Voltage settings. I have fried my CPU by not knowing what I was doing. Read up on it properly. This is a red flag. So be careful Manny Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
December 1, 201213 yr That sounds good! I think, I'll do it like that. 4.4 GHz with that machine should result in a good performing FSX. It isn't my intention to max out all the sliders. Since I am absolutely happy with the graphics as they are on my old machine (Autogen normal, Scenery dense, everything else in the middle or slightly above), I only wish that the FPS will increase and stutters will be a thing of the past!
