DX10 runway lights - dim or not visible till the last moment?

Featured Replies

I did have a quick scan through posts but didn't see anything specific. If I've missed something please let me know!

Using DX10 I'm finding that all runway approach lights are rather dim and many don't actually show up until I'm just a few miles from the threshold (default or addon airports).

I didn't notice this happening in DX9 - if anything the runway approach lights were too bright!

Anyone else getting this issue?

Thanks

Adam

Hi Adam; I guess no-one has responded because it's somewhat subjective and not everyone (well - me!) flies at night. What I have found, though, is that those lights are very much at the mercy of the individual developer. I recently purchased "Halifax" from SimAddons (http://www.simaddons.com/) and their runway lights - actually all of the airport, lights are sharper and clearer than any other lights I have ever seen anywhare - DX9 or DX10 - so it can be done, I'm sure. On the other hand - I also purchased FT's St. Maartens, and their lighting - again DX9 or DX10 - is poor by comparison, so I think it needs an evening or two, with a stock airport and a saved "approach mode" flight at 1 a.m, and repeat it with different Halo.bmp's and different settings within the FSX.cfg. In the same vein talking about FlyTampa - It's an early FSX airport - I think it was Martin and George's first airport in FSX, and was made using some of the FS9 techniques (I don't know this for sure - merely speculation), but I also worked a little bit a few months back in some attempts to re-create FlightZone's KPDX. - and found it's runway lighting to be exactly the same as that of St. Maarten's; this being dim or none existent when close up ,but then growing bigger and brighter the further away the lights were, culminating a great big combined bright glow at the far end of the runway,

Here's a sample of how to change the brightness of the various lights:

[Display]

RUNWAY_LIGHTS_SURFACE_SCALAR=1.0

RUNWAY_LIGHTS_VASI_SCALAR=0.8

RUNWAY_LIGHTS_APPROACH_SCALAR=0.8

RUNWAY_LIGHTS_STROBE_SCALAR=0.8

... and there are a couple of Halo's here in the Avsim Library, I think.

All the Best,

pj

HI Paul and thank you for the info!

I'll try tweaking the lights a bit and see what happens.

Cheers

Adam

Sorry if my query is off topic.Would it be possible to get the runway lights appear in 3D when used with NVidia 3D vision and a 3D monitor? Thank you all for the great effort to tweak FSX for DX10.
