How does FS decide where there should be AI aircraft...

Go to www.projectai.com and look for tutorial links. You did not say what version of FS you have but the basics are similar.A traffic compiled file is created from three text files. One relates to airport data, another coordinates aircraft symbolic links to the AI models by an assigned number, and the third is a flightplan where for each aircraft number one or more flightplan lines exist. They contain departure point and time, schedule of days of week, intermediate airports, and returning to the origination airport. In the compilation of the traffic file all of these three files are related.A full tutorial here would take too much time and space. The decompilation of your existing traffic files (a .bgl type) and recompilation after changes is handled by the freeware TTools, the version depending on FS version. Their is a freeware utility called AITM for AI Traffic Manager. You need the latest version one and then you need to download the upgrade beta version two for FS9 use along with TTools version 2. It is a project oriented organizer that gives multiple reports and can combine various projects each with its airport and flight plan text files sharing the common airports file all to give if you desire a single traffic.bgl file.If you get through the install, a little more complicated for version two, you can decompile your existing trafficxxx.bgl (it appears to hang but it doesn't really) to create the three files needed to generate the multitabbed report, modify any flightplan, and recompile (always make a safe copy in an isolated folder of the original trafficxxx.bgl file first) to integrate your changes. The commercial Ultimate Traffic, especially version 2 for FS2K2 and FS9, will generate its existing flightplans which you select and also offer utilities for mofdification.Hope this gives you an idea.
