December 28, 201213 yr I have a new GTX 580 "Classified" that I am trying to install (I previously had a GTX 460). On booting up with the new GPU I noted a beep sequence at POST: LONG-SHORT-SHORT-SHORT. Looking on the 'net I noted that this represents the GPU not initializing, most likely to a power connector not seated or installed. Sure enough, I noted that this GPU requires 2X 8-pin and 1X 6-pin power. The respective power connectors arrived today and have just been installed. On attempting to start I still get the same beep sequence at POST. On checking further on-line I have found posts with the same card and issue, with solutions such as "I need to load a driver for this card before trying to boot". I had cleaned off the prior driver, but I'm surprised that POST would even care what the OS has installed as a driver as the OS has not yet been accessed. Another suggestion was to update BIOS (P8P67 board, current BIOS version is 0105). I have not yet done that but thought I would try here first before doing so . I have never updated BIOS before, although I have an ASUS utility that will supposedly install a new BIOS version from the OS (Win 7 64 bit). Any suggestions? Any would be much appreciated. Thanks, Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.
December 28, 201213 yr Author Thanks Word Not Allowed. yes, 3 connectors, as I had described- I have never seen this before either, which is why I got caught without the correct power connectors. The old GTX-460 has 2X 6-pin only. I guess I will proceed with flashing BIOS with ASUS Update. Do BIOS updates usually need to be sequentially? Or are they cumulative (I can go right from one version to the next, bypassing intermediate versions)? Thanks, Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.
December 28, 201213 yr Out of curiosity, what make and model is your power supply? Edit - This is from EVGA's product page: Requirements Minimum of a 600 Watt power supply. (Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 42 Amps.) Could very well be that your power supply is not strong enough to power this beast of a card. Ryzen 5800X3D | X570 Aorus Pro | 32GB DDR4-3600 CL16 | RX 6800 | 500GB Samsung 970 Evo Plus | 2TB Crucial P3 | RM650x | Creative Sound Blaster AE-5 | NZXT S340 Elite | MSI 34" 3440x1440 100Hz
December 28, 201213 yr The first thing I'd do is update bios. You can bypass intermediate bios versions. Just a suggestion, but if you're asking a question about hardware/software issues, it's a good idea to have your system specs available. For example, I was wondering if your power supply is sufficient for the card? - Jev McKee, AVSIM member since 2006. December 28, 201213 yr The respective power connectors arrived today and have just been installed. Could very well be that your power supply is not strong enough to power this beast of a card Or the correct voltage using the "Connectors that arrived today"? My PSU's have always had the proper connectors for a 580. Sounds like there is a PSU issue powering the card.
December 28, 201213 yr Author Thanks everyone. Yes, I must append my PC specs to posts in my account options here. The PSU is a Seasonic 750W (I will need to double-check that, I have had it for a while now...). After updating BIOS version the problem persisted, then I noted that one of the 8-pin power connectors had 2 molex connectors (which I had originally assumed were just bridged together). On closer look I found that the 2 molex connectors went to different pins on the 8-pin, so I connected up another molex to the second molex connector, and presto- 3 bright LEDs came on, on the GPU card's edge, and we have graphics. I got as far as installing new NV drivers, but have had to close everything up as we have family visiting shortly for the night... will resume tomorrow. I have no benchmarks yet for FSX, nor has the system been under any CPU load yet. I'm assuming that I should have FSX generate a new FSX.CFG file and then make Word Not Allowed's tweaks (which have been working well). I also found that the beep sequence was coming from the GPU and not the PC speaker in POST- anyway, hopefully I am on the way to getting things going OK. Thanks, Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. December 29, 201213 yr Congrats, Bruce .. and good luck with the card. It would be cool if you would come back and let us know how it's performing in FSX. December 29, 201213 yr Author Yes, Jev- will surely post anything that I find. Thanks for the encouragement Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.
