  1. Well that was 15 minutes of my life I'll never get back. But, oh how I'd love to feel those pedals under my toes.
  2. Three questions about the Jan-2016 performance update (MS-FSX): 1. Will the update take if I just run the new -200 Base Installer installer over my existing T7 installation and select the "Repair" option? I guess what I'm asking is whether a complete uninstall-reinstall is absolutely necessary. 2. If we have the -300 expansion pack, do we also need to run the current -300 installer for that? 3. How do we verify that the update was successful? Sorry if these have been asked before, and thanks.
  3. Wondering if your answer is in the thread you started about this last year? Apparently MCE isn't using the runway info from your UK2000 scenery (EGSS 04/22), but instead it's only reading from the default runway data (EGSS 05/23). Did the MCE folks ever send you the replacement file mentioned in the linked post?
  4. Yeah, this is critically important. I have a 2600K on a P8P67 Pro v3.1 that's been running stable at 4.7 (with Speed Step enabled) for 4 years. In FSX my temps are typically 55-60 with the processor at full tilt with an Antec Kuhler H2O 920. Once a year I disassemble the major components and give them a good cleaning, especially the fans and the radiator. I use alcohol to clean the fan blades and hit the radiator with a high suction vacuum cleaner brush. It's amazing how much dust accumulates in the box. If your fans and radiator are holding a lot of dust your temps will suffer, though I doubt steady 70-80c would cause BSODs. You would still have about a 20-30 degree margin unless the temps are spiking higher when under load. Are you monitoring your temps over a period of time while under load or only checking them at discrete moments? A program like HWiNFO64 (there is also a 32-bit version) runs in the background with very little processor usage. It can monitor and log temps and many other system statistics over time. The log might reveal what your temps are when the BSODs occur.
  5. Before you decide, check the size of your FSX/P3D/X-Plane installation(s) and ask yourself how much additional space you're likely to need for simming in say the next 5 years. A 512MB or 1T SSD could very well be more than enough for your OS, flight simulator and many other apps. There's no performance penalty in FSX for running the OS and the sim from the same SSD, so no need to put the sim on a separate drive. SSDs are extremely fast, and I've never had a problem of any kind running this configuration. Also, develop a plan for backups and storage. You'll need a drive for cloning your SSD. I use an eSata Western Digital Velociraptor (10,000rpm) for this. You may also need an additional two drives: 1 for storage and 1 to backup your storage. I suggest you use the storage drive for all downloads and for virtual memory space in order to keep SSD writes/erases to a minimum. I built my system from scratch in 2011 and still remember how much fun it was. I tried to future-proof it as much as possible and still have no plans to upgrade it because it keeps speedily handling everything I throw at it. Enjoy your new box!
  6. Victor included the METAR in his post: SBGL 060925Z 27004KT 2500 BR BKN004 20/20 Q1019 060925z = 6th day of this month at 0925 Zulu (GMT/UTC) which is 05:25 Rio time.
  7. Chris, thanks so much for this pointer and huge thanks to the developer. Peter has given us an effortless solution to be able to rebound our FSX/P3D installations after config file corruptions. Genius!
  8. It's hilarious how many FSX:SE advocates come unhinged when an FSX:MS user states they can't see a reason to switch. They're accused of being illogical, stubborn, even "cultish" inhabitants of the Dark Ages in refusing to go with the flow of technological "advances." This is all such rubbish. I am a case in point. I've spent 5 years carefully building an FSX:MS system that simply works. I use only PMDG aircraft and lots and lots and lots of highly detailed 3rd party airports, global sceneries, REX textures and ASN. I have never had an OOM or CTD. I am totally satisfied with the performance of FSX:MS. Every simmer who doesn't want to switch to FSX:SE has their own reasons. In short mine is that I don't have the time, patience or need to completely reinstall and tweak another version of FSX including all of my aircraft, sceneries and utilities. Based on everything I've read, and I've read most of the opinions and observations about FSX:SE here and elsewhere, there is absolutely no incentive for me to do everything required to made the switch. I also like not having to deal with the stuff each new FSX:SE update has and will continue to break. Give me a stable unchanging core program that I know will work everytime I want to fly. Whatever deficienes FSX:MS has, and there are none that diminish in the least the immersion factor for me, I can live with them. The bottom line in my logic is: if it ain't broke don't fix it. Is that logical enough? So, FSX:SE adopters, I'm happy for you if you've experienced improvements to your simming experience. But, FSX:SE advocates with an attitude, how about lightening up, eh? I've seen way more snarky comments and name-calling from you folks than from simmers simply content to stay with what they have.
  9. Tom, You've worked so hard and given so much to guide AVSIM's development to the stellar flight sim resource it's become. I am forever grateful to you for all I've learned here, and for the many ways this community that you created has enriched my life. Eventually all of us will ride that tailwind into eternity ... you're just headed there a little before us. In the meantime, I will miss you. Thank you, Captain, for everything. Jev
  10. After running the SP1d installers over my existing NGX installation, weather radar didn't work. Following Kyle's instructions in the first post of this thread I completely uninstalled then re-installed the NGX via the SP1d base and expansion installers. Everything now works fine. As a side note, re-installing liveries wasn't as big a deal as I thought it would be. I had previously installed lots of them that I rarely if ever used, so this gave me the opportunity to slim down the whole NGX installation by a couple of hundred megs. Took all of 30 minutes from start to finish. Thanks for the instructions, Kyle.
  11. Thanks for the links to jetstreamtv and the KLM YouTube channel. Great stuff.
  12. No. Purchase it and then download/install it whenever you want.
  13. BAGNO/N0431F260 translates to: at BAGNO speed = 431knots altitude = Flight Level 260
  14. Last January I flew Barcelona - Rome (on Vueling) and Rome - Berlin Tegel (on GermanWings) with no problem or delays. My backpack arrived with me on both flights Like most airports in Europe, there are fast, frequent and inexpensive train and bus services between Fiumicino and central Rome. I love flying in Europe because the fares are so much more reasonable than here in the U.S. If you can stand the cattle-car atmosphere, RyanAir is your best bet for cheap flights. They have specials running all the time, so check with them first. Right now, for example, they're offering a $49 one-way non-stop London Stansted to Rome. This is my go-to site for checking fares: https://www.google.com/flights/ Hope you have a great trip.
  15. Your post tempts me to launch into a rant about how common it is for people to misread others' posts and then bash the poster for having an opinion different than their own. KingGhidorah was clearly saying that in reading posts from FSX:SE adopters he has not seen evidence of huge improvements. He was not suggesting that this observation is based on personal experience. So your assertion that his thoughts on FSX:SE are illogical is based on nothing. I really wish people would cool their jets about all of this. The same kind of knee-jerk accusations were all too common when MS Flight was released. People were seen as either fanbois or nihilists, and it seems to me that these kinds of ridiculous divisions are developing once again.
  16. Well done! Keep them coming! My only suggestion would be to include some of the great sounds built-into the NGX package. I don't know why so many video makers tend to hide these behind music.
  17. I have to challenge your assertion that PMDG balked at DT's taking a "small" slice of the profits. None of us has any idea what terms DT offered, but I believe Robert when he says that the offer was not in the best interest of PMDG or the community.
  18. Quite possibly. Euro Truck Simulator 2, which was released over a year ago, is now on sale for 85% off. Ditto for DT's Train Simulator, which often goes on sale with huge discounts.
  19. Frooglesim attempted to install the 777 into FSX:SE today. It went badly. He had both versions of FSX installed. Even though he designated his Steam version of FSX as the target, the a/c got installed into his standard FSX installation. This may have something to do with the registry? Also, the 777 installer requires you to uninstall the model already installed before it will allow you to start a new install. It seems like at very least it's a complicated process if you have both versions of FSX on your system. Also this, if you haven't seen it: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/457475-pmdg-products-and-steam/#entry3133704
  20. That's good news for VATSIM fliers.
  21. Heard from an administrator at Boston Virtual ATC that you can connect to Steam's multiplayer only via FSX:SE. He also told me that the multiplayer functionality of connecting to independent servers (Digital Theme Park, Boston Virtual ATC, etc) has been removed. I'm still trying to find out if IVAO and VATSIM work with FSX:SE. Anybody try these yet? Edit: Had this response from "Sam," an Admin/Developer at Steam, relative to connectivity to online flightsim communities other than Steam's own multiplayer: "Our intention is to actively support existing independent FSX community initiatives because they have kept the community alive for a significant period of time. Whether it is possible or not, I can't say for certain, but if we find any situations where the Steam Edition is preventing involvement in these connected communities we'll investigate as thoroughly as possible." The intention certainly sounds good, and hopefully will be backed up by returning this functionality to the sim.
  22. I'm curious about changes to the multi-player functionality. Is multi-player now limited exclusively to Steam's server or are connections to servers such as DigitalThemePark, BostonVirtualATC.com. etc. still possible? Thanks.
  23. Very nice scenery, Aharon. I tried the FISD version of Rovaniemi last year but it was for FS9 and hadn't been optimized for FSX, so performance was not good. This is great. Thank a lot for the links.
  24. This will probably answer your question, Mark:
