2400 or 2600 MHz RAM for Ivy?

Recommended Posts

Not really a computer techie so how do I find that out ? My motherboard is a Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 rinning my i5 2500k at 4.4 Ghz

Thanks Paul

Only testing will answer that. You can get 2400 RAM now for very cheap. Your chip may only run the RAM up to 2000 or it may run at rated 2400 speed but you can't know till you try.

There is a very good reason why the performance difference between 1600 and 2400 memory is trivial. (This info is confirmed by MSI techs on the MSI Mobo forum). The reason is CAS (Column Access Strobe) which has a significant performance effect on memory with the lowest value being the most performant. Several memory generations back we would buy memory with a CAS of 2 which had a huge advantage over memory with a CAS of 3.

Today CAS is higher due to memory density but 1600 memory wins hands-down over 2400 because its CAS is usually half (or more) than that of 2400 kits. Yes raw speed is useful but CAS is what you want to be looking at.

I have great 2133 memory with a CAS of 9 but even these have little advantage over 1600 kits with say a CAS of 6.

Cheers
