August 8, 200421 yr Hi all,Do you think we should ask the mods to setup a freeware review forum? I think it would be a great idea - someone finds a good bit of freeware, writes a review with a few screens and then we would all learn about it.Also I think it would be good for developers as they would find out whats people think is good and bad about their release. What do all think?Cheers,
August 8, 200421 yr Doubt it would work well. You'll have VC vs no VC arguements and critisism that would not be productive to encouraging freeware authors to continue in their efforts. One or two people with an impartial rating system could work. It would be comparible to movie critics. I know if Susie Soandso hates a horror movie, I know I'd love it. But letting everyone open up with their opnions, while it could be useful and constructive I see it damaging the hobby more than doing it any good.
August 8, 200421 yr We have kicked this idea around before and even ran a poll on the subject, if memory serves. It ain't going to happen. A Freeware Review forum is an open invitation to air petty grievances between authors, nit-picking critics, those with IQ's of their shoe size and egos the size of the moon, and ultimately woul wreck havoc on contributors to our hobby. We don't want any part of that. Freeware of any quality, caliber, stripe, beginner or expert, needs to be supported. Having a review forum would do more damage than good IMHO.
August 8, 200421 yr I see you point!Could the avsim review pages be expanded in some way? At least then those reviews would be vetted?I'd personally love to see more freeware reviews.Cheers!
August 8, 200421 yr I would volunteer, but my qualifications are probably a bit low and my available time is probably not enough.
August 8, 200421 yr Tom,I don't mind knocking together a few reviews in my spare time!If we could get a few people on board I think it would be a good feature!Cheers,
August 8, 200421 yr Paul, in volunteering, you realize that you are attempting to eat an elephant with a teaspoon, right? If you are serious about volunteering to objectively review freeware and are willing to put the time into it, nad make that commitment for six to twelve months, we would love to have you aboard (or anyone else serious about contributing in this or any other way). Just send an email to [email protected] stating your interest and we'll get you the material you need to sign up as a staff member.
August 9, 200421 yr >I'd say that forum exists......>>>Right here!I would have to agree. I always manage to hear about the good ones right here in this place :)
August 9, 200421 yr Author Commercial Member "TERRAIN TERRAIN, PULL UP!"That's what my warning system is telling me about a freeware review forum. Nice idea in theory but in practice...IMHO freeware developers need to be encouraged as much as possible, not put under the same scrutiny as commercial developers.
