been following the tutorial 1 and at the part before t/off and you chk the config I get the control deflections but they are not green as per but clear any ideas why ?

First off, try to use the keyboard arrows to move your controlls during the test. If you don't get green boxes then, there is something wrong. Howerver I expect that you use some sort of joystick. If you do it could be that it doesn't give 100% output or that the deadzones are too big.
