I seem to have found 2 update files for 737 NGX one named sp1 and one service update one. Can anyone tell me if I need to install both and if so in which order.

Just download the SP1c for the base or expansion here

No, the NGX installer is updated every time a new service pack is released, so you do not have to worry about installing SP1c, as long as you purchased it after the update was released.
