I have been given a modified fsx.cfg file. I'm confused as to how I should apply it. Does it replace the default settings.cfg file as well? if i change my default settings.cfg will that override the fsx.cfg file?

Make a copy of your original FSX.CFG and the modified one. Then delete the original and use the modified one but any changes you make in FSX will get saved to the currently used FSX.CFG file.

 

At any time, you can just delete the FSX.CFG file and let FSX build a new default one.
