Reinstalling/Migrating Editvoicepack saved files?

Featured Replies

Hi folks, I have a rather unusual question. I had suffered a virus attack on my PC, and needed to reinstall the OS and FSX drives from scratch. Well not totally from scratch, I had kept a backup of my previous FSX install on a separate drive and was able to copy/paste some important files or settings to help reinstate my previous settings as much as possible. For instance, I put a lot of work into updating my payware AFCADs to represent real life airline assignments more realistically than the ones provided by the developers, so I keep backups of just the afcads themselves. Another thing I found I had to do is to add mipmaps to some addon scenery texture files, so I also keep a backup of the airport's texture folder. Upon reinstalling FSX, I just run the original addon installers, and then copy/paste the AFCADs and mipmapped texture files to restore my previous work.

Regarding Editvoicepack, I have added plenty of user contributed airline callsigns, and was hoping that I could transfer those files to the new install, but I'm not sure if its possible to move the old database of edits to the the new FSX install, and if so, where the files would go. I'm sure it's possible, but I fear wrecking my setup if things go wrong. I don't know how Editvoicepack works, or where it saves edits (is the native FSX ATC sound file updated? Is it safe to just replace the file, and how does it read updates by Editvoicepack?)

Has anyone run into this situation? I imagine there are people who have put in tons of work into customizing their ATC via Editvoicepack, and hopefully I just need to move a file somewhere from my previous FSX backup to the new install.

I've done this a couple of times, but I've done it by saving the original .evp files (EVP modifications) when I made them and then Importing them individually via EVP on the new system. This can take a while if there are lots of them, but it works. I also believe there is a Backup/Restore facility in EVP to do this in one go, but I've never used it.

Both of these options assume you backed up before you had the problem. If you didn't, then I THINK you should be able to copy across the two files which EVP modifies, which are airlines.cfg and usenglishbig.gvp. Not sure where they are, but they shouldn't be too difficult to find. Back them up first of course !

EDIT: Apparently usenglishbig.gvp can be usenglishsmall on some versions of FSX. In either case it should be in the /sound folder

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, I never thought about keeping the .evp files archived. And that wouldn't really be needed because of the backup function, but for some strange reason, I don't see a backup entry in the file menu in my EVP. The user guide mentions it, but I don't see it. I wonder if it for the FS9 version?

I may try copying the two files you mention, I just want to make an image backup of the FSX drive in case things go crazy. I am very nervous about messing with FSX after spending the better part of the last week reinstalling FSX and all my addons.

I can confirm that copying over the file, usenglishbig.gvp will reinstall your Editvoicepack callsigns as I've recently done exactly this. I didn't copy over the file, airlines.cfg, but have encountered no problems.

You only need to copy airlines.cfg if it has been modified e.g to add new airline names created via EVP.
