Question regarding STAR in LSZH

Featured Replies

Today I took a flight to LSZH. I planned to join STAR from KELIP waypoint, but soon found something confusing. From KELIP there's only KELIP 1G available. Then I picked ILS RW34 based on wind.

The STAR would be KELIP MOSIT ZH626 ZH625 KLO GIPOL.

And the approach procedure from GIPOL is GIPOL KLO ZH726 UTIXO MILNI.

What I found confusing is why I need to fly from KLO to GIPOL then a 180-degree turn back to KLO. Is there something I did wrong or that's the design of procedures?

Edit: My charts are from Eurocontrol.

David Chen

I think you got confused by the go around info. As the KLO GIPOL transition is for the missed approach.

The dashed line would indicate your planned route to GIPOL.

As for the KELIP1G I'd fly ZH625 to UTIXO

Thanks for your reply.

I still do not get it. I think the STAR asks me to fly from KELIP to GIPOL. This is KELIP 1G.

This approach chart seems to guide me from GIPOL to KLO then ZH726, is it correct? The dashed line you said should be indeed G/A procedure, but I mean it's the STAR that confused me. This kind of route is really strange. Is it because of terrain or something?

David Chen

No , you are misreading the chart. The dotted lines are merely giving guidance on where the waypoints GIPOL and ZH726 are situated by reference to KLO.

You need to find the "Transition to Final Approach" chart which takes you from GIPOL to MILNI

edit. On second reading those dotted lines are giving you guidance ..... mmmm Not so sure now sorry

Try to find the Transition chart i mention though.

Unfortunately I cannot find anything like transition chart.

I use Navigraph for my charts, it is listed as Arrival Transition to RWY34

That's strange. There are really no such kind of chart in AIP. What does your chart say?

Edit: Can you find something like IAF? It should exist in every approach.

David Chen

The approach is shown on the Instrument Approach Chart. It is GIPOL - KLO - ZH726 - UTIXO
