August 15, 200421 yr Anyone know what a "Converging ILS" is and how does it differ from a regular ILS? I have charts for both at KDFW. I am not sure how to read the converging ILS charts as opposed to the regular ILS charts (which I DO know how to read).Thanks.Chris Catalano

I am not>sure how to read the converging ILS charts as opposed to the>regular ILS charts (which I DO know how to read).>Its the same as an ILS approach, the converging apoproach is for simultaneous ILS approaches with another runway where a normal ILS approach with those runways operating at the same time would cause a conflict. The difference may be something like a different missed approach procedure between the ILS and the converging ILS approach. The chart should note which runway(s) would be in simulatenous ILS operations when the converging ILS is in effect.Regards.Ernie.
August 15, 200421 yr To further my learning curve I purchased the caharts fr the lawoer 48 and HI as well as AK. I do so every year or so. Even as the real worlds charts expire every 54 days (or somthing close to that, and being aware other updates are also avalible for specific areas in closer time frames, for the "people that want to pick"). My point is that due to the fact that FS09, will keep its current data settings (unless an add on)it (for the sake of FS9)dose not matter as if you where to purchase the Sim Charts from Jeppeson, (I hope I spelled that correct).OK, Here is the litle I have picked up. At some airports runways cross each other. I purchased a DVD from Sporty's called "IFR Communications, Washington National IFR". (of course its now Reagon National), and the DVD takes thru the whole flight. Point is the DVD speaks at lenght about the many places at Reagon National (many being a relative term) where the different runways cross. A great place to view the chart is at the wb site is, www.myairplane.comon the left side of the home page you can chose to look (and print) at the above mentioned field, there you can see what the DVD was talking about. Now, I only sim with alimited amount of groud school intruction. Thus, I am sure I am off base somehow. Be that as it may, I was really suprised when it was made to my ayyention that runways cross at some airports, more so the fields with limited land in which to expand. I hope the ATC people at these airports are compensated for what has to be a big task.I hope this was a bit of help. I have a lot to learn, so please understand my statments are are made within my large learning curve.Take care.
August 16, 200421 yr Author OK - here is the wierd thing - I did a flight from Houston to Dallas DFW tonight. I got assigned to land 36L (the one with the "converging" ILS approach. When I looked at the list of runways to choose from in my PMDG 737NG, there was only ONE reference to 36 (Left OR right). I never had the option to choose 36 L or Right. WIth no options, I chose the 36 on the FMC. What was wierd was that I dialed in the ILS RWY frequency for 36L (111.9), and I got everything to work fine - only the graphic representation on my PFD CDU GPS showed the white dashed line for runway 36 RIGHT as the runway on my CDU GPS unit in the 737. It still continued to track 36L, but the only graphic that showed up on the GPS was a white line for 36 R. All my other instruments worked fine (glide slope indicator, localizer needle, EHSI, etc.) I was brought right to the threshold of 36L with no problem. Not sure why it did not graphically show me 36L. Is it perhaps that it uses or derives the data from 36R somehow to guide me down? Also - yes indeed - both runways show up on the chart - 36L, AND the runway I guess I am "converging" with (36 R). Anyone get understand this? How did I get down so perfectly tonight? Thanks!Chris Catalano
