January 30, 201313 yr I'm looking at this ssd: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820249033 It doesn't perform on the absolute top of the charts... but it averages out with read/write/disk access time above most other drives... So far I'm seeing their 5 year warranty - huge plus in my opinion... 4K random read - way up @ 100,000 iops My questions are about their controller. Is the Marvell controller any good? Reliable? There's not many reviews on this model anywhere. Anandtech has a good benchmark (dated now) that I'm going off of: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6328/samsung-ssd-840-pro-256gb-review/4 | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
January 31, 201313 yr My questions are about their controller. Is the Marvell controller any good? Reliable? There's not many reviews on this model anywhere. I have never had any issues with the Marvell controllers. Crucial used Marvell's older design on their M4's which became known for stability. SandForce controllers had issues initially but even those seem to have been fixed. I think you can't find a ton of reviews because you are probably looking for PX-256M5Pro. Most reviews I found were under the name PX-M5 Pro. This site has a link to reviews - http://www.johnnyluc...d-database.html Tweaktown gave it a 93%. Hope that helps!
February 4, 201313 yr Author Thanks... I'm just looking for something that does everything really well... as opposed to a drive that does random read perfectly well and everything else alright. I know Plextor was a around a lot in the 90's and early 2000's but I hadn't seen anything from them until this drive came out. There's plenty of other trusted SSD names too... argh. My 120 Mushkin is just running out of space for FSX.... I also can't decide if 240/256 is enough or if I should go 480/512. 512 seems awfully large for just FSX. Regardless if I do I'll put FSX on the new one and probably put my OS and or BF3 on my old 120. | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
February 4, 201313 yr Definitely give the Samsung 840 Pro drives a look. They appear to be very good in all categories. Also, unlike Sandforce based drives, they perform just as well with both compressible and incompressible data. Anandtech and a couple other sites have good reviews. I've got one and it's running great so far.
