Connection between third-party Start menus and CTD/Controller issues?

Featured Replies

I have a newly installed Windows 8/64 (Pro) and a new instance of FSX, it has been running for several days now with no issues, until tonight when I encountered both the "missing controller" issue and a CTD. I had just installed a third party Start menu ( Classic Shell). I wonder how many of us that are having issues also have a Start menu app installed into Win8? In my case, I got sick of having to use File Explorer to go find installed executables that have shortcuts installed to the Start menu.

I have my controller axes and buttons assigned in FSUIPC (registered),

Thanks, Bruce.

For the CTD, you should run AppCrashView - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/app_crash_view.html and provide us with the error report (just copy and paste the whole report here). Since AppCrashView works for Windows 7 I'm sure it works for Windows 8 too. For the missing controller issue, did you plug the controller into another USB? Are the USB controllers drivers up-to-date with Windows 8? I use Driver Scanner to occasionally check for old drivers - http://www.uniblue.com/software/driverscanner/. It's not going to bother with your Windows 8 installation but will look for old hardware drivers like for your USB controllers. You do not have to purchase. It will identify the drivers out-of-date and you can pay to have them automatically download and install or you can simply go to the site where the drivers are located (via a Google search) and download and install them yourself.

Best regards,

Jim

I don't understand why the alleged lack of a start button is such an issue with some Windows 8 users.

The start button is still there, just hidden.

The installer will pin a tile to the start menu, then cursor to the lower left corner of the screen

reveals the start tile, one click shows them all them all and one more click will start them.

Thus, two clicks, just like Windows 7, Vista, XP.......

Any .exe file can be pinned to the start menu using the "pin to start" option and I also pin my most frequently used

.exe files to the taskbar, using the "Pin to Taskbar" option.

Nick.

Thanks Jim, for the useful info on AppCrashView (which is now running), and the USB controllers- I will try that too.

Thanks also Nick- since I first wrote the start of this thread I am now using the start menu that you described.

One question- where do you see the "pin-to-Start/Taskbar" option? Do you mean in the installer (which I know about)? Or is this a Win 8 setting?

Thanks, Bruce.

If you right click on any .exe file or .exe file desktop icon you will see this

(except the .rar options which come from Winrar and Pick Link Source

which comes from a very useful utility called LinkShellExtension

and the big red dots. :P)

Nick.
