August 24, 200421 yr Hi,I would like to know if the new 737-800/900 has the trans-oceanic (ETOP) capability ?Many thank's for your answereNicolas
August 24, 200421 yr It's ETOPS :) Yes, they can be certified for ETOPS operations, I think Icelandair has done so for example.Remember ETOPS isn't just a factor of the aircraft, operator procedures also come into play.
August 25, 200421 yr Commercial Member "Engines Turning Or People Swimming" hehe ;) And by the way, ETOPS is really just a specification for how far away the plane can be from a suitible emergency airfield, it doesn't inherently mean the ability to conduct a transoceanic flight.I know Aloha has ETOPS on their 737-700s for conducting KSFO-PHNL runs. August 25, 200421 yr ETOPs is not a/c specific. Although the a/c and engine manufacterers need to demonstrate outstanding reliability also the operator must have a solid track record of safe operation with procedures for maintenance, monitoring of airframe and engine over and above those required for standard operations in addition to extra procedures for the training and assessment of crew capabilities. Initially the state of registration may only permit say 90 mins ETOP. After a trouble free year they may be granted 180 mins and so on. I would suprise me if 737s were used as such as they are designed for short haul ops. That means relatively many cycles with lots and passengers/cargo and relatively little fuel. They would not be efficient nor cost effective at longer ranges. At the other extreme a 777 should not do short haul as it is designed for few cycles lots of fuel and relatively fewer passengers and cargo. One tragic example of the misuse of an a/c was the Aloha (who seem to be unable to understand how to use a/c) 737 that was used a short hop regional transport. Because it flew 30 min sectors the number of pressurisation/depressurisation cycles were so high that it eventually burst!! It landed safely minus a passenger and a stewardess who were sucked out.
August 25, 200421 yr The 737NG's have been ETOPS certified for 180 min. operations for several years now. But I don't understand your point. On the one hand you say that the 737 is designed for short-haul operations and, on the other hand, you denegrate Aloha for using them on short hops. It would also help clarify if you explained a bit about why you say that Aloha seems to be unable to understand how to use aircraft. (BTW, only one life was lost in the Aloha 243 accident, no passengers were killed).Doug Intel 10700K @ 5.1Ghz, Asus Hero Maximus motherboard, Noctua NH-U12A cooler, Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB 3200 MHz RAM, RTX 2060 Super GPU, Cooler Master HAF 932 Tower, Thermaltake 1000W Toughpower PSU, Windows 10 Professional 64-Bit, 100TB of disk storage. August 25, 200421 yr Aloha 243 was do to bad maintenance and lack of FAA inspections/oversite. And as stated above only one stewerdess loss her life.Aloha also has a few of the B732s ETOPs cerifified as well. They do not fly to KSFO. August 25, 200421 yr Continental's 737NGs are certified for ETOPS. This allows them to be operated on Air Micronesia routes, where the routes are long haul and places to land are few and far between.
August 26, 200421 yr Yes you are right. I checked my facts and regarding the 737 ETOPS I am talking complete rubbish. The ETOPS in this case is I imagine because of the severe lack of alternates in the region and nothing to do with short vs long haul!I have been informed that the Aloha 737 incident was due to the mis-use of the a/c due to very short-hops and a frequency and number of cycles than the a/c was designed for. Lousy maintence ensured there would be problem so can be considered the primary reason I guess.Appologies for the curve-ball. I am correct in the certification of an operator for ETOPS though so I get to leave with my head, if not held high, not too low :)
