AST Tech sceneries...any good?

Featured Replies

Haven't heard about AST Tech before but just found they have released a number of sceneries one of them being Stockholm.

Stockholm is my home town so I'm tempted to buy it but thought I would ask you guys first what your experiences are with AST Tech scenery products? Might also mention that I have both UTX and GEX Europe installed but that wouldn't be a problem as I understood it looking at the product page for AST Tech Stockholm.

Never heard of them. Beware though that it is photoreal scenery only. No autogen, no 3D objects and it doesn't include an airport either: it's just the city in photoreal. What I don't like is that they don't tell you how large the area is. No mention of how much ground is actually covered. And obviously this scenery will stick out terribly from the surrounding landclass scenery... What I do like is that they don't only show screenshots from the right angle but also those that don't look too good but give an honest impression of photoreal scenery. Then again, most shots are taken from above the airplane, so you don't really see what you would see while flying... If you fly using topdown view all the time, this scenery might be nice. ^_^

I don't have any of them, but looks like a solid photoreal product. Resolution could be better, but it is right around the same as default and they include water masks and night textures which most photoreal products don't. If the lack of objects bothers you, you can always install the SDK and use the annotator to add your own, not hard, but a bit tedious.

Best, Michael

Thanks for your input guys, think I'll stay with what I already got at the moment that is UTX and GEX.

Well at least photosceneries look good from some angles, default scenery looks pretty horrible from every angle possible.

I just did a review on AST Tech scenery. It's good quality, as long as you know what you're buying:

It's the kind of product, IMO, that's the best option if there is no other option when you're looking for something besides default scenery

Thanks for your input and the link to your review. As you say if you're looking for something better than the default scenery this might be a choice but in my case where I already have both UTX and GEX this combination although not 100% true to what you would see at the same position IRL is a combination giving me a very nice look and experience.

The single thing that I think would be a little bit cool with a product like the AST Tech scenery is to see specific landmarks that aren't there when using the kind of scenery I'm using now but then on the other hand I'm a little bit frightened by what it would look like at the border between the two types of sceneries.
