It really depends on weather, direction and assigned runway. There is no "best" star.

hi,

so say for example you were flying in fair weather, how would you know what to choose? is there a program you look at or something?

An example.

Sydney-Melbourne. The flight plan would look something like this - DCT WOL H65 RAZZI Q29 ML

That means after takeoff, you may head direct to Wollongong, then follow the H65 Jetway to RAZZI then onward to Melbourne. By looking at the ATIS for Melbourne today, they appear to be using rwy 34 for landing, which is a VOR, as it has no ILS, so you would look at the airport charts and find the correct sid which includes the RWY 34 arrival.

Furthermore, a good flight planning tool is - http://rfinder.asalink.net/free/

A lot of other users use payware programs. I don't as I can find the resources online.

If you want to follow a real world route, you can look up www.flightaware.com however this does not include all flight routes.

If you are flying in the USA, then you can access the procedures through the FAA website.

If you are flying in Australia, then you can find them on Airservices. You can also use google and find the charts for UK ect.

If your arriving from the north, you wouldn't chose a STAR that was a southern approach route. Then you choose the runway.

That is a good question and the answer is that without a flight plan program or approach charts there is NO WAY to tell which STAR you should choose, assuming that there is more than one for the runway where you want to land. For example, in the PMDG 737 NGX, let us say you are programming the tutorial 1 flight but you don't remember which star to choose. With only the FMC to guide you, you are just as likely to choose a corkscrew approach.

What I do if I want to use a STAR is use either FSCommander or Plan G where you can see on a map the various approaches and how they fit with your plan just by clicking on their names. The other way is to use a program like SIMplates X for the Ipad and to check out the approach plates for the arrival airport. There are also free or pay sites on the web with plates.

SIDs are Standard Instruments Departues, STARs are Standard Arrivals... As mentioned, which one is "best" depends on departure/approach direction, runway in use, and certain other factors. Special temporary restrictions at departure or arrival airports might also dictate a certain SID/STAR be used.

If you have any PMDG aircraft, you can open the folder in,

Your drive:\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\PMDG\SIDSTARS,Find the appropriate airport text file, and open with notepad.

The runway will be listed next to the SID or STAR.
