CPU or Graphics card

Featured Replies

Just a quick question, I have an I7 930 running at 3.9 and a GTX 580 Graphics card.

Running at a resolution 1900 x 1200 I can get good smooth flight with the NGX, and Rex with fairly high settings, I know I am pushing it but if I run at 2560 x 1600 on my Dell 30” detail looks so much better but I struggle with FPS when I get to an add on airport, (not surprisingly) which is causing the problem the CPU or Graphics?

I will upgrade to Haswell if it looks like a good overclocker, I understand I am getting good results with my current setup, and realise I am trying to push it a bit too far but always striving to go a bit further.

Many thanks

I would download GPU-Z or MSI Afterburner (works on non MSI cards) both will show you GPU and Video memory useage. Then on your 30" Dell Run FSX in windowed mode with task manager open on the performance tab alongside whatever GPU monitor you've got and you'll be able to see for yourself what the bottleneck is.

One of your CPU cores will be running the main FSX engine and should be at ~100% all the time, if it isn't then it's likely that your GPU is the bottleneck this will backed up by the fact that your GPU is near enough 100% continuously. Alternatively if your CPU is running 100% and your GPU is a lot lower then you know your CPU is the issue.

Your problem is the low clock speed of the CPU, Steve. The 580 will easily handle three 19" monitors (TH2Go) at 30 frames with a 4.9-gig proc., and a pair of them in SLI will handle 3 x 27" in Nvidia's Surround mode.

That would be interesting to know running high resolutions? Particularly the memory usage.

I agree with paul, when I saw this topic I thought, Definatly CPU, however run the tests as I may be wrong.

I haven't tried haswell yet, or seen any results so I can't comment on whether that will make a difference

Thank you all for your reply’s, I downloaded afterburner and ran as PieEater suggested, and to my untrained eye:-

2 cores of the cpu are at 100% 1 at 75% 1 at zero

Graphics didn’t get above 54%

So looks like the CPU

Many thanks

Just out of curosity, What was your GPU Memory usage?

Sorry forgot you asked that, just ran test gain and hopefully there is a sceen shot with results, You may know what you are looking for better than me

if you click on pictue it is all there

Thanks Steve. Its not displaying the memory usage. Probably in a setting you have to tell it to.

sorry just noticed that, I didn't scroll down far enough :(

Thanks a bunch Steve. I really apreciate it. Thats what I was looking for. I see your using 813mb/max 1119mb out of 3gb available. I want to know why any one would recommend a 4 gb mem card? Or under what circumstances, for FSX, it would be of value? Steves running a high resolution monitor/monitors.

Oh yes, CPU OC be a good thing BTW. :)

Pleased you know what you are looking at, when I got the 580 I nearly got the one with more memory but after reading a lot of people said it could cause more OOM Crashes, now you have said that I am pleased I didn’t bother.

I7 930 overclocked to 3.9

4096 Textures

6.5 LOD

******* tweaks on CFG

Word Not Allowed’s Nvidia inspector settings

Most settings full apart from water Set Low and traffic set Low

On 1900 x 1200 I can get a comfortable 30FPS obviously dropping at complicated airports but still smooth.

Thank you all for you help, and looking forward to see if Haswell can improve thing when released.

Many thanks

Your Graphics card is definately not the issue. Make sure to optimize your settings to allow it to run at its potential through Bojote's tool and NVIDIA Inspector. My FPS drops into the low 20's when using PMDG NGX at KJFK with heavy AI traffic. Its still reasonably fluid though. Forget about achieving 30 FPS in every situation. Just not possible unless you're somehow able to get a stable overclock at 6+ Ghz using Ln2 cooling or something crazy like that. I have an I7 3770K OC'd to 4.5 Ghz and my full specs are posted in my profile. Good luck!
