Hello,

 

Suppose you have to divirt to your alternate airport set in the FMC, either direct or via missed approach. How do you activate the route?

The alt destination page has pure informative purpose. Once you confirm your diversion, you have to do that manually - enter the alt airport code as destination on the route page. Then enter STAR, route way points, etc as required.
