March 28, 201313 yr My computer locked up this afternoon and had to reboot. No this comes up.. I am logged in as admin. I ran spybot and win32.downloader.gen showed up and removed.. still same. Let us know what operating system your using. That will make a big difference in our ability to give you proper advice. As a after thought, what anti virus are you using? My first guess would be that you still have a virus that has changed all of your accounts or applications permissions so they 'think' you are not the correct administrator. Alternatively and just as likely, what SpyBot removed had already done that damage. If that is the case and a restore doesn't work check your user accounts and see who or what is listed. We will go from there. Regards, Mel
March 28, 201313 yr Author Operating system is Windows XP sp3. Anti virus is AVG free updated and run daily. I install spybot once a week, run, then remove from my system. I checked my account and I am the administrator. I just updated avg and ran, clean. I just updated and ran spybot, clean. When I was running avg a pop up came saying i needed to update AVG to keep protected. Because I just updated it seemed odd for this pop up so I just closed the window. It appeared to be an AVG window but who knows these days..sheesh I did a system restore 4 times with different checkpoints and it said I cannot restore to this point. I moved back about 3 weeks and it finally restored to that point.. Same issue everything else seems to work fine but FS9. I am not saying this is the problem but I noticed it after installing the CRJ 100/200 from this site (http://www.premaircraft.com/) as per the readme text. My computer locked up earlier today after running REX and FS9. I only closed one screen but did not exit FS9. I went away for a couple hours and came back and could not click anything had to hit the reset button on my computer to reboot. The REX icon was flashing away for quite a while before it shut down. Any more info let me know.. I am at a loss right now.. Thanks Again
March 28, 201313 yr Author ok I checked my other user "h" left on there by a tech shop when I upgraded motherboard, cpu and gpu years ago. He said he left it there because I transferred my existing drive to the new system and had to make another user.?? I have never logged on to it before. I did now. only a few of the icons from my "rick administrator" user were on there???? why would they be there too, and only some?? I have never logged in to "h". I started fs9 from "h" and a screen came up with the FS9 "accept eula" I did, and the splash screen came up and started loading for about 5 sec. then disappeared. Tried to run again, cd spun up, splash screen for 2 sec then disappeared. then quit each time.. never did load. Arghh Logged off "h" logged back into "rick administrator" hoping the splashscreen would come up. nope error message same as before. What would happen if I deleted the "h" user? eeek this is also my work computer with all my business emails and proprietary work software on it. I just about hit the button but didnt  Time to take it to the tech shop??
March 28, 201313 yr Author It appears my fs9.cfg file is missing from my "rick administrator" account. it appears that somehow a . in my cfg file turned it into a text file?? I see one in the "h"account but 0 bytes.. Should I copy my backup cfg file to the folder? Here is my search for fs9.cfg on my system.. It was recommended to search and see if the cfg was marked :read only" on another forum when i googled my problem. Here is a shot of my search.
March 28, 201313 yr Richy, I had the same problem some 2 weeks ago, and the reason for that was AVG changed the Flight simulator flights folder to be unshared on the PC. The folder where FS read the starting situation. So what I did is shared that folder again, and all worked 100% since. I don't know why AVG just blocked that folder. I am using Win7 64bit. but it has nothing to do with that it was the AVG that was blocking FS9 to access the folder. Look at that option it might solve your problem Regards
March 28, 201313 yr Author The folder where FS read the starting situation. The main FS9 folder? AVG that was blocking FS9 to access the folder. How do I get AVG to stop blocking access to the folder? Sorry not much of a techie but I am trying real hard to understand this. I right clicked the FS9 folder then properties then sharing. It tells me to drag the whole folder to the shared directory??????? It never was in there? hmmm sorry, I feel a bit out of my element.. :(
March 28, 201313 yr The folder that I am talking about is not the main folder but rather under ; My Documents\Flight Simulator Files that if you are using XP as mentioned earlier. Just right click on it and select properties and share it for everyone on the system. also you need to show hidden file by going to folder option, and go under user\app data\microsoft\FS9 or whatever your fs2004 folder name is and there too make sure it is shared. I can't remember the place of that folder under XP, as I use WIN 7 and it is under User\APP data\Roaming\Micosoft\FS9. You also might need to go on AVG and add that folder in the exception, that it won't scan it. that would help. I have all my FS2004 folders in the exception. the main one and the Flights simulator one under my documents That should fix it for you. Good luck
March 28, 201313 yr I right clicked the FS9 folder then properties then sharing. It tells me to drag the whole folder to the shared directory??????? It never was in there? hmmm sorry, I feel a bit out of my element I have never heard of FS9 needing to be shared or why it should be for that matter. You being administrator should give you all of the security permission and access you need to run the program or anything else you see fit to do. But with the AVG anti virus, who knows? I can't remember the place of that folder under XP As per Walouigi, for Windows XP that would be (OS hard drive) \ Documents and settings\ 'your user name' \ Application Data \ Microsoft \ FS9. With view hidden files and folders allowed. Right click on the FS9 folder and select properties then sharing. In the 'Local sharing and security' section if there is a check mark in 'Make this folder private' box, remove the check mark and click apply then close. That should mean that it does not need to be shared to be run especially by the administrator. You can safely delete the "h" account, that should have been done by whom ever put it there during repairs. Once you have regained access as per the advice on AVG you may want to delete all of the FS9.cfg files you have found and allow FS9 to rebuild that. That would be to insure you have no duplicates floating around. Regards to all, Mel
March 29, 201313 yr Mel, I too never seen that before, and I have been with Flight Sim with more then a decade. For whatever reason 3 weeks ago my AVG blocked this folder to be accessed for the FS9.exe, and I end it with the same issue. And by looking deeper, and looking at all the possibilities, I founf by sharing it solved the problem. I too am the admin on my PC, but as I said I work with Win7 not XP, so it might be different for me. Regards
March 29, 201313 yr Author I went to the FS9 folder in app data.....etc and there is a check-box beside "local sharing and security". There is a check mark in there but cannot remove it. It is greyed out.. "It says the options on this tab are not available because it is in another folder" then a blue link. I clicked it and the checkbox is available and I unchecked it. It is now working like mad "setting permissions". We will see
March 29, 201313 yr Author No Joy :( .. Same thing.. I deleted the "h" account now so there is just my account as administrator .. rebooted and no joy either..
March 29, 201313 yr It seems perhaps you may have suffered a double whammy. The virus AVG didn't keep out made changes before you got rid of and now AVG is in the way of you making repairs? Mel
March 30, 201313 yr You may try disabling temporary AVG and try to share, and see if you can share it, or actually remove AVG completely, share the folder, then reinstall AVG. Just a suggestion. Good luck
March 30, 201313 yr Author Tried both.. no go.. the file is shared already or at least the checkmark for "make this folder private" is unchecked.. Thanks so much guys... Can someone check the size of the FS9.exe file for me please? I am thinking maybe a corrupt exe file??? just a hunch.. Mine is 1362KB 9/1/2004. Is there a repair section on the cd's? Might give that a try if there is such a thing. If I reinstall the program, will it wipe out all my add ons?
