April 1, 201313 yr hello all. due to my military service i have been out of the loop for a while when it comes to FSX and PC hardware. and now that the next couple of years i will be on shore duty i figure it would be a great time to get back in. i was wondering if anyone could help in recommending the hardware i should get for a new rig. i like to fly the heavy stuff (PMDG, ect) and like to use addon weather and scenery and of course the AI. so i would need something that can handle that, im hoping computer power has advanced enough to get good FPS now with sliders almost maxed? i would like to keep this project below 2,000 if possible. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks adam

From what I have seen though, it is a bit of a lottery as to the outcomes you achieve. Some people can have similar rigs and obtain quite different FS outcomes for no apparent reason. FS9 and FSX, both being a very old platform seems to have a life of their own. One day all fine, the next day chaos, sometimes for no apparent reason, other times depending on what you have done with your rig, even a simple MS update can send me backwards. I now only download those updates if the update is urgent and important, and then I establish a roll back point, so if FSX has issues I can go back. There is no doubt, PMDG, REX,ORBX, coupled together really push the boundaries with MSFS. Maybe one day the new platforms will conquer the 64 bit memory architecture and things will improve. http://forum.avsim.net/topic/398016-avsims-official-software-and-hardware-guide-for-fsx/ Good luck with your build project Regards Geoff Bryce
April 1, 201313 yr hi all Here is the configuration i am expecting for my new computer (close to 1K euros): it will be ok to run FSX with PMDG on IVAO or VATSIM with full details (more than 20fps?) (without AI) I7 2700K SandyBridge ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z GTX660 Ram 4X4 Go corsair 2x WD Velociraptor 250Go 32Mo 3.5 Win7 64. thanks for your help

The bottom line is that whilst you've been out of the loop there is still no hardware that will allow FSX to run with all the sliders set max and your FSX experience is still going to be one of finding a compromise that you're happy with between performance (FPS) and graphics (texture rendering). The most important componant when it comes to FSX performance is the CPU and currently there are 3 revisions to consider, Sandy Bridge is the previous generation but is generally easier to overclock, Ivy Bridge is the current generation doesn't overclock so well but is a bit faster when it comes to processing power, you can perform major surgery (delidding) to overcome this shortcomming but it's not for everyone, in which case there is little to choose between the two. Haswell is soon to be released, performance for FSX doesnt look to be much of an improvement but we dont know how well it will overclock. In your shoes I would wait until we know how well Haswell overclocks which will be another month or so. Sandy Bridege and Ivy Bridge use the same current motherboard, Haswell will have a new socket, chipset, and potentially faster memory support which should improve performance. If this raises any questions - feel free .............
