Transferring From One To Another...

Featured Replies

Hi there, I will be getting a new machine in the next couple of weeks. My question is: can I transfer FSX folder(s) from one HDD to the new one without corrupting files etc...?

Ciaran Andrews.

You should have no problems whatsoever.  Lots of people do it.  Just remember FSX and FSX addons will not run without having the necessary registry entries, Microsoft Visual C++ 2005, 2008, and 2010.  Using an old or current FSX.cfg, dll.xml, etc., on another system is not a good idea either.

Best regards,

Jim

Great, thanks for the swift reply Jim!

Just wondering, what equipment may I need to accomplish the task of transferring files?

There are a lot of options.  A USB cable connected to both computers with a transfer program will work.  I have a 1 TB external HDD and I can transfer everything to that drive then plug the USB cable of the external drive into the new computer and make the transfer.  You could also take out one of the HDD's of the new computer and place it in your old one.  It will be immediately recognized.  Then transfer everything over to that drive, remove it from the old computer and install it in the new computer.

As far as setting up FSX on a new HDD, I'm not familiar with that process.  I have always reinstalled FSX/Acceleration then addons like MegaScenery I just point to the folders and add them to the Scenery Library.  Any commercial addons requiring a key or registration number will need to be reinstalled.  Remember, FSDT airports require that you first uninstall the product from the old computer.  Then you can install it on the new computer.  This is, of course, to avoid piracy.  All commercial aircraft will have to be reinstalled too.

Best regards,

Jim
