Could someone please explain the graves ...?

I see a thread with the title:"Some FS2006 suggestion I have sent to FS team"and what I huge dissapointment if you take a flight (in Alaska for this example) ... you have the beautiful mesh for Alaska ... you do everything as from the book ... flightplan - realweather - ATC - AI traffic ... and you set off for a two hour cross country flight, just to arrive at your destination and to find the runway in a huge grave!- but I'm sure this does not need a patch, after all - it is as real as it gets, isn't it.Please send some pictures of the runways in Alaska that are in huge graves.:-)RegardsTerblanchePS: If the runway elevation is correct, and the mesh is correct, what is going wrong with the runways that either stand out like a boil or sunk in the ground like this picture ...?

Hello Terblanche,At least four factors can account for poor fit between runways and mesh. All of these situations can be found in the sim.1) The runway elevation is incorrect. This can produce extemely poor fit with the mesh.2) The mesh elevation is incorrect. This is generally the case with the default mesh, but rarely creates problems by itself.3) The airport is at the correct elevation, but in the wrong location. This may not cause problems with the default mesh, but if the more accurate elevations in add-on mesh are very different from the default, serious problems can develop.4) Runways in the sim are all flat, real world runways are not always flat. In these situations the runway may fit with the mesh at some points along its length, but not at others. The poor fit in these cases is annoying but not severe.Steve

Hi.It's a surprisingly common problem! I have a list of several hundred airports in FS2004 which are more than 100m off the default mesh elevations. Can you tell us which one this is?Assuming the mesh is right and the AP elevation is wrong, it's about ten minutes' work to fix it using [a href=http://www.jimkeir.co.uk/FlightSim]LWMViewer[/a], and the FS2004 SDK from Microsoft. Why not give it a go?Cheers,Jim Keir

Hi JimDon't know much about SDK's and fixing BGL files. I will download the LWMViewer (thanx for the link!) and I will see what I can sort out. The chances that I will visit the same airport is almost nul because I love flying VFR, and so I will take a plane and start at a point and then fly from the south of Peru to Alaska. All the way up up UP and with this trip I am on my way back and will now cross Canada to go over to Europe. With this I see places and airports where I will never go to and in the last 6 or 7 years, I've crossed the world several times and I hardly ever visit the same airport twice. The picture was taken of 05AK which is 5 nm NW of PAAQ in Alaska.Thanx for the feedbackTerblanche

HI Jim, "It's a surprisingly common problem! I have a list of several hundred airports in FS2004 which are more than 100m off the default mesh elevations."If you want those to be least an attempt to be fixed in the next fs, send them to [email protected] with details and coordination, I recommend to everyone that's found incorrect data, to send them via their email.ThanksChris Willis[link:fsw.simflight.com/FSWMenuFsSim.html]Clouds And Addons For MsFs

Hi.Yeah, probably should. You may not need to wait quite that long, though :)BTW, does anyone know of a decent place to get real-world airport data including the ICAO code and elevation? I found a place a few weeks ago (www.landings.com) but they don't have a huge selection.JK

Are you familiar with www.AirNav.com?As far as FS is concerned, though, for fixing any particular airport I suggest combining real world elevation data with slewing to find the altitude at the location you are going to place the airport.Thomas

Terblanche:Great picture! Wow, when I first read "graves" I thought what is he talking about? But you're right, that's exactly what it looks like.http://www.2decker.com/media/solent1-2.JPGAlex ChristoffN562ZBaltimore, MD

JK, if you don't aware ms about this, the same issue will happend probably again on the next flight sim version and you will have to wait another 3rd party to fix it. I recommend to send them with your details, screenshots, situation saved flight etc to their email, problems will have more chance to be fixed for the next version on default.ThanksChris Willis[link:fsw.simflight.com/FSWMenuFsSim.html]Clouds And Addons For MsFs
