April 17, 201313 yr So, looks like there's a real situation going on in Dublin at the moment. There's a mad wind blowing tonight, 55knots across the main runway with Wind shear. So, what does everyone do but divert. unfortunately it's now hitting the fan. The typical diversion airports Shannon, Cork and Belfast are now full and can take no more. In addition, the following airports are now full; SNN, ORK, NOC, BFS, BHD, GLA, EDI, PIK, MAN, LPL, BHX, that's every airport within an hour of Dublin and planes don't have that sort of fuel to divert further. The situation has just escalated to an aircraft having to declare a Mayday fuel emergency. For those interested, check out this for an interactive map and audio of the chaos: http://www.airwavesireland.com/ Regards, Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.
April 17, 201313 yr Thanks for that Ro. That explains why I have not been able to pick up RTE on LW all day since just before 10am this morning just after The John Murray Show ended. That link you have posted is just what I was looking for because at MAN a few weeks ago I was chatting to a spotter who had a laptop connected to an ADS-B unit picking up all that traffic in the skies above us. Fingers crossed all flights make it down safely, wherever. Did the Met Offices not see this one coming? Rick Almeida
April 17, 201313 yr Author Did the Met Offices not see this one coming? No, totally out of the blue, no one had any idea this was coming until it came, which was too late for all the aircraft that had taken off with minimum fuel. Problem is there's only 2 aircraft of ours on the ground in Dublin at the minute and there should be about 25!!! There's going to be chaos tomorrow morning as we'll have to get every airplane back to Dublin and then off again. Most pilots will be out of duty before they can get the aircraft back in tonight which means everyone will have to overnight at their diversion fields for 8 hours and then fly the aircraft back up, by the time the aircraft arrive it'll be 9-10am and more seeing as you've to get every aircraft that was scheduled to land over a 3 hour period into the airport, plus all the normal arrivals! Expect the disruption to go on for a few days at this rate. Pity LiveATC has been down in Dublin for a while, this would be great stuff to be listening in on. Regards, Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.
April 17, 201313 yr Thanks for that, Ro. Last night I was praying for that little boy in Boston. Tonight I pray that crews, pax, and aircraft reach safe landings wherever. Looks like schedules will go out of the window tomorrow at Dublin and outstations elsewhere. That explains why our own BBC Met Office also got caught on the hop, as no warnings. Rick Almeida
