FSX closes when minimizing (NO CTD ERROR)

Featured Replies

Hi lately i came across this problem with fsx. I have stop using ENB series because of this problem . Now its happening again but even worst . When i am on a long flight an i want to minimize the screen or go to any menu option fsx will just close an not give me no error message or CTD it just closes . My computer is running perfectly stable an smooth fsx as ever . But now it seems i can't minimize the screen or even create a flight plan after i complete one . To make it even worst it doesn't even give no error at the event viewer. Does anyone have any suggestion that could be the cause for this problem ?

Mr Leny.... you're back!  On long flights, it is most likely overheating.  Overheating will give you no error, just a crash.  Okay.  What's overheating?  It could be your CPU cores (one or all), memory modules, the motherboard, or the video card.  What causes overheating?  High fsx settings such as LOD_Radius=(anything above the FSX max of 4.5) and/or Texture_Max_Load=4096 (the default is 1024).  High settings in REX, AS2012 or any other weather program, even the default will cause a crash.  A wrong setting or tweak in the FSX.cfg will also cause FSX to crash w/o any reason posted.  I had my LOD_Radius at 7.5 and got frequent crashes but no reason for the crash.  Sometimes though I would see a message that I had an OOM (out of memory) crash, sometimes not.  I moved it to 6.5 and TML to 2048 and things are working great again.  You have a nice system but it is not capable of maxing out FSX w/o getting a crash once in a while.

I use RealTemp_370 to monitor the heat on my system.

Best regards,

Jim

Thanks Jim , Am back  an happy to be back  my computer listed in my spec had bad hard drive error so i used one of my computer around the house . This one is different it doesn't have nothing on it but fsx itself . I know many talk about how I7 is the best CPU period i honestly think so to . But i haven't left behind AMD an their powerful FX 8350 , so far i have run fsx smooth as ever not to mention that i am currently using My FIRST NVIDIA GTX Card well i have two cards one is the MSI GTX 560 TI Twin Frozr 2G OC Edtion an well the GTX 690 that i was about to put on sale since many said it doesn't improve much for fsx . So to try out what the 560 TI can do i installed it to an Asus Sabertooth Gen 3 R2.0 Motherboard . I currently running on 4.8GHZ with Antec 920 Liquid Cooling . The Case for this build is Cooler Master Full Tower Storm Trooper . I Have FSX on its own 1TB WD Black Edition SATA III an i also have the operated system on its own SSD Crucial M4 512GB SATA 6Gb/s.  I have about 4 Corsair System fans also a fan controller which i can monitor the temperature when fsx loads it stays below 55C the CPU  an the system temperature stays at 48C , so the CPU temperature just goes up an down it stays at 50 When i push the antech 920 to extreme performance but it is noisy. So i think temperature might not be the problem . I went through some of the files on my fsx main folder an found out i had sweetfx install int their so i delete it run a flight an went well . So i couldn't help it an went to the original site for this effect an downloaded the latest version which includes a new shader . I have downloaded this guys preset http://sfx.thelazy.net/games/preset/330/. It looks amazing , so i did a quick short flight an i was able to minimize the screen with the effect on!! but then when i went back to full screen fsx disappears . So am about to try the same flight again but this time am going to turn off this effect when going though menu or minimizing the screen .

Sounds like you have things back in control and hope it stays that way.  I didn't mean to sound authoritative that your system is overheating.  It's my form of communicating and providing some suggestions as to the cause of the crash(es).  I still think your 4.8GHz overclock is too high and is going to give you periodic crashes.  I know some computer techies who have been unsuccessful maintaining a 4.8GHz overclock.  I had mine up to 4.8 and once at 5.0 but I saw periodic problems so went down to 4.6 and now to 4.4.  At least you should know the reason for any unexplained crashes should you have one in the future.

Good luck with SweetFX!  Hopefully you can get it working properly as I have seen some nice images.  Not worth the frustrations to me though.

Best regards,

Jim

Thans JIm   I lower my clock speed to 4.5  i never overclock my I7extreme edition so  i wanted to know how it feels with an fx8350 . It is smooth so lower it back down to 4.5 an it is smooth also didn't saw much change. SweetFx makes fsx colors more. Am going to give another try , last night i fell asleep on a short flight an the airplane was going in circle around the airport for hours until i woke up. Amazing it still had 20% of fuel left LOL .

That's a different type of crash (sleeping) I'm familiar with but unable to find a solution or prevent from happening again.  I'm glad you lowered your OC.  I think you won't find much difference and you'll see less crashes.  Putting too much strain on your hardware and system when running a CPU intensive program like FSX does not seem to work well for everyone.
