Indecision - yet another new PC question

Featured Replies

Nice set up and nice looking case too. The only thing I would change is the PSU to a Corsair HX750, or atleast a HX650.

The HX series are able to maintain a more stable voltage when overclocking.

Diego.

How about one big 1TB hardrive with 2 partitions? Might save you some money.

The problem with that is you still have the OS and FSX trying to read-write the same physical drive. The point of putting the OS on one physical drive and FSX on another is so that neither are fighting for control of the read/write head.  Creating partitions doesn't resolve that problem.  If you go with SSD's, many argue they don't have that same problem since there is not needle floating around looking for data and there it might make sense to just get one larger drive and partition it.

I just built a new system (for FS9, so stop giggling) with a 3570K, 16GB 1600MHz Ram (only ordered 8, but 16 arrived - heeeeeeey) and a 660TI. Got Win 7 on a 120GB SSD, FS9 on a 240GB SSD, and a 128GB SSD for other games (mostly C&C set and Crysis 1-3) with an old 500GB mechanical drive for 'stuff'. With a pretty enhanced FS9 (you name it, I've prob got it) I'm closing in on around 150-160GB, so for FSX I'd go a 240GB drive at least. I know the SSD doesn't really help FS, but damn the loading time is short (around 5-10 sec, vs close to 60 sec on my old system.

My advice is Windows on a 120GB SSD, and FS9/X on a 240GB (at least) SSD. Prices are dropping quickly, so maybe a 500GB SSD isn't out of your budget. Another good thing about SSDs is their power consumption, my Sandisk Extremes are rated at 1.6W max. Nice and cool.

Cheers, SLuggy

Thanks for all the suggestions chaps.  Assuming nobody spots a stupid part choice, I'll order this in the next day or 2.
