October 6, 200421 yr Hey All,I'm an fs9 user, and I've been re-installing recently all thesystem and FS as well.Have any of you encountered this issue with the visibility andskyline, once above 12000 feets, shown here:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/93484.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/93485.jpgonce you pass FL120, suddenly the visiblity goes unlimited, and it gives a very unrealistic sight.I have checked carefully everything with FSUIPC, but now I wonderif I didnt miss anything else, like in the fs9.cfg or display.cfgIn my previous install, the setting were ok, so I know it is possibleto get a better rendering at high flight levels. The worst thing is, because of this, the mountains in the backgrounds, because they are too far away, seem to be dancing on the skyline.I really hope someone will give me a tip here.Awaiting your advises,Regards,
October 6, 200421 yr I am having the same problem with a Radeon 9200. I had it set once then upgraded the drivers and this problem has been there ever since. I don't believe that FL120 is a magic number, rather it seems to be the top of the limited visibility layer. It's as if the maximum visibility slider in Options>Setting>Weather doesn't work. R-
October 6, 200421 yr Author Yea, I agree,I dont think either fl120 is a magic number.Even some more weird thing is, it depends of the time of the day:during daytime it's okay, and when nearing dusk the visibilitysuddenly goes unlimited. As I stated before, I had saved my FSUIPC settings before Ireinstalled everything, so that I could recover the same visualeffect, but seem it's been useless.Something else I dont recall. Also, I use the same drivers, I havent changed them.one thing I havent reinstalled yet though, is Active Sky.Maybe Actuvesky had set in my former system something else.Arg, I dunno what to think...
October 6, 200421 yr Ever since FS9 came out I have had problems with this as well. I have a registered copy of FSUIPC and have messed around with all the weather settings but with no luck. The only way I have found to make things look better is to set certain weather in the sim itself. I cant remember the exact settings, but I know it involved setting dew points and humidity. This created a very 'real looking' haze effect which did not go away, even at the higher altitude. This method of course is no good if you like to use real weather or activesky etc.If you come across a fix, let me know!GlennAthlon XP 2800+1gb PC2700 RAMATi Radeon 9800 Pro (Cat 4.8) Glenn Ryzen 3700X, X570 Pro Wifi, 32GB 3600mhz RAM, Nvidia Titan Xp "Galactic Empire", RM750x PSU, H700 case, 2x NVMe M2 SSD, 1x SATA SSD
October 6, 200421 yr Author All right Glenn,Thanks for the tip anyway.Doing something with the dew point makes sense undoubtely.I'll keep on looking for the exit, and will let you know.Regards,
October 7, 200421 yr Author All right guys,I think it's even stranger than I thought first. In fact, I havd found my previous setting and the skyline looks goodat high altitude during DAYTIME (first pic). The weird thing is, when nearing dusk, the visibility suddenly jumpsto unlimited (second pic), and this, without changing anything.Again, would there be anything to do?Or should we just wait for the second patch?...Anyway, I'm just about to give up, I've spent too much time on thisbug now...http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/93592.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/93593.jpg
October 7, 200421 yr This seems to be a bug introduced with FS2004 concerning haze and I've mentioned it here several times since FS2004's release. Sorry to say, Microsoft didn't announce any changes according to what Avsim reported vs. the upcoming patch. To test, make sure your vis. ceiling is higher than your aircraft altitude. Then, try these three tests:1) Screenshot taken midday, set MSFS date to 4/23/03 (that date offers a pretty nice, natural look to the haze), set vis to 40 miles2) Screenshot taken 45 minutes before sunset, looking to the east, same date, same vis setting3) Screenshot taken 45 minutes before sunser, looking to the west, same date and vis settingNow, repeat the same three tests with the vis set at 30 miles. At 30 miles, the vis looks more natural--there's something in the code that causes problems with vis >30 miles, just as vis ten miles or less causes gray skies.Compare these results to FS2002 (if you have it), and you'll find FS2002 more consistent with the way it applies visibility. The catch here is the vis ceiling--if it is below the aircraft's altitude, then the vis will appear unlimited no matter it's setting, other than what's defined in the sight distance in the display settings. Note that these tests are for setups where FSUIPC isn't controlling visibility.-John
October 7, 200421 yr John,Thanks for the tips, but I have a couple of questions. How do I set vis down to 30 miles? It only appears to drop to 60 in the FS9 menu. Do you mean in the weather settings page? What settings should I have FSUIPC on? I see you were mentioning ceiling which I thought would be set in FSUIPC. Maybe you could clarify for me. Sorry if I appear a little dumb with this but the vis issue has bothered me since I installed FS9, so I would really like to make sure I am understanding 100% what you are saying. Thanks,Glenn Glenn Ryzen 3700X, X570 Pro Wifi, 32GB 3600mhz RAM, Nvidia Titan Xp "Galactic Empire", RM750x PSU, H700 case, 2x NVMe M2 SSD, 1x SATA SSD
October 7, 200421 yr You want to lower the vis. in the weather settings, but use the advanced option where you can set the upper limit of the vis. I don't have FSUIPC installed for FS2004. When I did use it in FS2002, I had all the vis. options disabled, since I prefer setting up my flight environment on my own. More often than not, a 30 mile vis. offers a very natural look to flights and I usually have it unlimited when I am flying in a locale noted for clear, dry air, such as the Great Basin.-John
October 7, 200421 yr Try these settings:Visibility slider: 30. 20 will give you an even hazier view if that is what you desire.Advanced Mode Visibility Upper Limit: 40000'If your altitude exceeds the upper limit, you will get a very sharply divided line between horizon and atmosphere such as in your 2nd pic.
October 7, 200421 yr I've found the source of my problems. I had called up an old flight with downloaded Microsoft/Jeppessen weather (I ususally create my own weather themes) and it just doesn't limit the visibility properly at altitude. So I caused myself a little extra work (loading, unloading, and reloading drivers). Like that's never happened before :) R-
October 7, 200421 yr Author Thanks,John,Somehow, you make my day, because you confirm what I think to bean MSFS bug, and not only some fault in my settings.I omitted to say that my visibility ceiling in the advanced weathersetting is set to 45000 feets, unfortunately it doesnt changethe problem 'one hour before dusk'.I will however try the different situations you give us and reportwhat I find.I was a strong fs2002 user, and also think the visibility renderwas better then. One of the first thing I noticed in fs2004 was this very issue, but -how? I cant remember unfortunately - I once succeded in gettingthis fixed. And now I'm looking for the solution again.I use FSUIPC because I feel it deals usually in a very good waywith the weather settings. Thanks again, and I can only regret as you do that MS didnt correct this bug inthe upcoming patch, it really make the dusk high altitude flight sight very unrealistic.Regards,
