Scenery flashing solution found!

Featured Replies

First, let me make it clear that this is not a complaint against any of the items, contributions, and developers of any of the following: What I am addressing may be system specific just to my computer and setup, or a short directly between my ears. However, on the chance that anybody else has this situation I thought it might be prudent to share the following and it may make somebodies use of all of them more enjoyable:I recently purchased the FLYTAMPA scenery (GREAT!). I discovered that any time I located a plane in the Manhattan area, in my case at KEWR or KJFK, then moved it to any of the FLYTAMPA airports that the texture was flashing and flickering like crazy.I have always had intermittent flashing problems with at least some of my SimFlyers airport locations (ALSO GREAT), so just for the heck of it I tried the same thing with them. Lo and behold the same thing. That was the reason it was intermittent. As long as I was not coming from New York, no problem, but if I was, the flashing probably occured.I unchecked Manhattan scenery in the scenery library at startup as this was the only thing I knew of which I had in common with KEWR and KJFK. Problem solved. Enabled Manhatten scenery again, and the problem was back. As long as I had not located at KEWR or KJFK, all scenery was clear as a bell. If I ever located at either of these two airports (With Manhattan Scenery enabled), the flashing was present at all FLTTAMPA locations, and for sure some of the SimFlyer locations (I did not check all of them). I assume all.OK to try and limit all that I could. backed up and remmoved all addon scenery with the exception of FLYTAMPA TAMPA. I did the same thing with my scenery.cfg file and implemented the FS9 default installation file (which I also had backed up along with many others) and only added Tampa Intl. and the Manhattan scenery (by editing). Note Manhattan scenery installation defaults to its own folder in the FS9 root directory and is not included in the Addon Scenery folder. Same thing. As long as Manhattan scenery was in my scenery.cfg folder (checkmark in the library) FLYTAMPA Tampa flashed and flickered. When I disabled or removed Manhatten Scenery (Unchecked in the library), FLYTAMPA Tampa had no problem.I am too dumb to know the ins and outs of technically why this is happening, but if you ever have dingy textures at your add on locations (At least FLYTAMPA and SimFlyers) I suggest you give the above a try. There are several workarounds to implement all of the great scenery above. Of course if you have not originated a flight from the trouble region, there is no problem and all is academic. If you are flying low and sightseeing (don't know why you would be doing that anyway from KEWR or KJFK) you probably are going to have another leg anyway to most of the other airports. Between legs restart FS9, originate your new flight from somewhere else to FLTTAMPA or SimFlyer locations and no problem. If it is a one hop flight from the NY locations, I would disable (uncheck in the library) Manhattan Scenery (Which IMHO is ALSO GREAT. You are not going to be flying low and slow sight seeing the NY area anyway for such a flight. If anybody else has seen this on your system relative to flickering and flashing ground textures at FLTTAMPA and/or SimFlyer locations I sure would appreciate your confirmation (mostly grass areas adjacent to runways and the like). (Hate to be the only sow in the pen, but on the other hand am happy if nobody else has any quirks!).I hope something here is of some help at least to somebody!Happy flying:RTH

I have the same problem. Are you using Aerosoft Manhattan Scenery? It happens on most Simflyers and FlyTampa sceneries, but also on UK2000 and German Airports and on some other freeware ones.Ground is flickering on those airports when I'm flying from NY area (KJFK, KLGA, KEWR).I'm sure that Manhattan scenery (which is great btw) is causing this.I also found that file "ny-3d.bgl" in Aerosoft Manhattan scenery folder is causing this.Did you found any solution for this?Currently I'm disabling Manhattan from scenery library when I'm flying from NY area to any of those airports. But when Manhattan is disabled, buildings are in water. So that looks crazy..Regards,

I just had two recent flights from KEWR to FlyTampa destinations which both ended up in flickering textures on arrival.. I've not been a big New York-to domestic destinations-flyer untiil recently, so this strange bug has passed me. However, I also use Manhattan by Aerosoft, and this must obviously be the problem. (together with FlyTampa)Well I'm off to look at FT and aerosoft forums for a solution (hey it would be nice to fly out of a New York which actually looks like New York ).Very glad that this very old thread came up, and put an end to my speculations!Cheers, johan
