Freeze & Unfreeze - PMDG - MD-11

Featured Replies

Hello all

I love this plane I did 100s of flight with it, it's simply amazing, however, I started to have an annoying problem with it, in an approximate 4 hours flight I get FSX freeze, also all associated applications running for FSX, if I just wait 10 minutes FSX will respond again and all applications is working just fine.....now instead of getting this every few flights ....I get it on each flight for 4-5 times on average ? (during FSX freeze the computer is responsive normally)

Any guidance will be very appreciated

Best regards

Try this fix - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947246.  I realize you are not getting OOM's but this might help as it increases the Heap Limitation in Windows.  When FSX freezes, you are probably getting close to an OOM anyway.  I use to get several freezes during a flight and traced it to my weather program and simconnect.  During the flight your weather program may be trying to connect to the weather server and cannot for some reason and I guess the weather program goes berserk because it cannot update the weather.  In my case(s), I did a Ctrl-Alt-Del and went into the task manager and shutdown the weather program.  Trying to get back into FSX is very difficult after this occurs but it is possible with several Alt-Tabs to the FSX program.  It's a bug with no solution other than to keep trying.  I subsequently flew the same route without the commercial weather program activated and used the default weather program instead.  No freezes.  I tried the same flight again with the weather program activated and got the freeze later on in the flight.  So, in my case it was the weather program and/or the connection to the Internet.  Maybe disabling the weather updates will resolve the problem too.

High FSX settings will cause freezes too.  You have a nice system but not nice enough to handle FSX at max settings.  FSX can only use up to 4GB's of RAM (limitation of Windows) and any other RAM leftover is used for Windows functions.  If you set your settings to the max you are using a heck of a lot of resources.

Hope this helps.

Jim

OK I made a flight about 4 hours without a single freeze problem ....I know that sometimes it happens but I trust my judgment to say that I think the fix is working I kind of noticed improvement in performance .......Many thanks Jim ....I will keep experimenting :)

Glad it has worked so far.  I saw some improvement in performance too.  Just don't get too happy and turn more of your sliders up higher.
