Quick Question

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, I am installing Windows 7 64bit Pro and FSX tomorrow with the NGX etc again and have a quick question.

I have a SSD which is 120GB (Say 110GB usable) and a 1TB WD 7200RPM drive.

I am going to put WIN7 on the SSD, should I put FSX on there too or would it be fine to put it on the normal 1TB WD drive?

Thanks guys!

I'm no expert by any means but I also have, a 120GB SSD where I keep my FSX installation along with some add-ons and that's it...Most things FSX related live here apart from the external programmes like AS2012, REX, RCv4, and the others I have to delve into some more live on a WD640GB with Win764 os and everything else non FS related and it all works nicely on my system!

A ggod O+O defrag once a week and a good flush out with ASC keeps my system optimal and me a happy simmer

There will be loads of opinions here and that's just mine.....Coz it works for me

Well, make sure you don't defrag an SSD!  In my humble opinion, I would put Windows 7 and FSX on the SSD.  The problem might be space on the SSD.  My FSX installation is taking up 61GB but I have much, much more installed on other HHD's.  I know that the 61GB's includes almost all of the FTX/Orbx scenery so a normal install should have use less space.  FSX is most effective on an SSD in regards to loading only.

Best regards,

Jim

I would also try to get both the OS and FSX on that SSD. You will get better and consistent loading times. When you really get into problems with space you might copy a few FSX folders to the WD drive later on using the junction option (which fools Windows into thinking the files are still in the FSX folder where they should be while they actually are on another drive: obviously you will lose the SSD speed benefit). Make sure you only install on the SSD what needs to be there: as Chris said a lot of addons don't need to be on the same disk as FSX!

Ahh that's what i was thinking,my plan at present... currently installing WIN7 onto the SSD as the boot time's would be better.

Then going to follow Nick's guide that he posted online the other day (the massively long one haha!) to set it up then install FSX onto the SSD along with FTX Global (When it's released) and the NGX and then was thinking the likes of REX can be put onto the WD normal HDD.

Was just cautious as I remember many moons ago when I had FSX it had to be on different drive from Windows... :P

If you are going to use that guide, beware that NickN himself says it's far from finished yet!!! I read others have been using that guide already but how can you do that to the fullest if it's not complete yet...? NickN always insists on doing EVERYTHING in the right order and to the letter so it might be better (if you really want to go NickN's way) to wait until the guide is actually finished!

Hi There,

Yeah don't worry I understand it's far from finished but I meant in terms of setting up the actual computer, I'm using that guide as a beginner and his other WIN7 guide.

Finally got WIN7 installed now and the latest Nvidia driver after a headache day caused by my motherboard overclocking itself and instabilities but now after a google it's stable and downloading those beloved windows updates...

Might be able to fly this time next year... I joke.

Thanks for your advice though, is very much appreciated!  ^_^
