water animation broken?

Featured Replies

I'm posting this here even though the problem exists now in both DX9 and 10 because I'm not sure if installing DX10 stuff a couple months ago broke something.  I wasn't doing much over water flying then.  So I've noticed my wave animations seem to be not working correctly.  At altitude it looks like the water is "paused".   Also sitting on the surface there is a blocky texture floating by.  I also just realized (the 2nd picture) that it actually looks like the animation is underneath some weird layer.  Any thoughts?  I've tried going back to DX9 (uncheck DX10, install new animation in REX with "dx10 optimized" turned off) and going to 32bit vs. dxt1 wave animation and same problem.

Ok I created a short video clip.  On the water over both tropical and regular ocean textures and flying over ocean textures.  You can see it looks like the animation is underneath some sort of water texture and looks really weird.  I think it's a REX water animation problem but I'm not sure.

Looks a bit like the clouds reflections on the water. Did try to reduce the water effects settings in FSX?

Hmmm, I am set to 2.x low which would reflect clouds, but the sky was clear in those pics and the video seems like animation is not working right.  The only thing I can think of is maybe I'm remember it wrong since I don't necessarily fly over water a lot and maybe it's working normally considering the age of the sim and its effects.

Well, sometimes something come up and irritates us. I know this very well.

If you set the water effect higher (mid 2x) then you should see something different. Only to try something.

Can anyone confirm whether I'm seeing broken water animations/textures or if what I'm seeing is normal?

I do not see a problem.  I have my water setting at 5.

Just a reminder.... Your images are 1680W and the max is 1600W here at AVSIM (unless you link your photos from another website).

Oh, sorry about the images.  I didn't see anything except a size limit on the upload tool.  My FSX resolution is 1680x1050 and I was trying to keep them full size for better clarity.  Hmmm, so you think the video looks normal?  The wave animation is supposed to be under the surface of the water texture?  I did open a support request with REX thinking it was a REX water animation problem but they haven't responded yet other than to say it's under review.

I do not own REX so cannot comment on their product.  Have you moved your water resolution to 5 in the Fsx.cfg (mid-2x's)(as suggested by Spirit and me)?  Make sure too that you do not have your textures set higher than 2048 (HD).

Hopefully you can get this resolved as your images do not look good at all.

Best regards,

Jim

Oh woops I see it now, sorry about that guys I'll make sure to keep them under 1600 in the future or use an external hosting site.  Yes I have tried changing the water resolution.  I normally run 2.x low and I set it all the way to high and no effect.  Thanks for the confirmation though that I'm not crazy.  I suspect I might possibly just have something corrupt in FSX and will have to reinstall unless I'm able to find out what is corrupt and get a copy of it from somewhere.  If I need to reinstall I'll likely just ride the problem out until I build my new system in a couple months.  No need to freak out the activation server with multiple activation requests within a couple month period lol.

A high setting in DX10 mode would be ugly.  Believe me.  The shadows appear with more prominence.

Yes, I just went through that with my Haswell.  Fortunately I did not have to reinstall all my sceneries (except Orbx).  Just had to reconnect them in the scenery library.  I hope Tim over at REX can resolve your issue.  He seems to be very active in resolving problems.

Best regards,

Jim

Yeah I hope so too.  I was a bit surprised it took them 4 days to give it any kind of official response, and I think that was only after I PM'd Tim that I got one.  Usually they're quick, and all the other support posts had gotten responses so I was a bit concerned at first.  It had me thinking I didn't really have a problem.

Yeah I definitely would not try to run water at 2.x high but I was trying to see if there was any change at all for the better.
